Course Description This is an advanced course in which we explore the field of Statistical Optics. Topics covered include such subjects as the statistical properties of natural (thermal) and laser light, spatial and temporal coherence, effects of partial coherence on optical imaging instruments, effects on imaging due to randomly inhomogeneous media, and a statistical treatment of the detection of light. Development of this more comprehensive model of the behavior of light draws upon the use of tools traditionally available to the electrical engineer, such as linear system theory and the theory of stochastic processes.

Statistical optics

We have constructed a series of new code families for the spectral-amplitude-coding optical code-division multiple-access (CDMA) system, and proposed new transmitter and receiver structures based on tunable chirped fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The proposed system has been analyzed by taking into account the effects of phase-induced intensity noise, shot noise, and thermal noise. We have also compared the performance of this system with that of a former system where a Hadamard code is used. It has been shown that the new code families can suppress the intensity noise effectively and improve the system performance significantly. When the effective power is large (i.e., >-10 dBm), the intensity noise is the main factor that limits the system performance. When the effective power is not sufficiently large, thermal and shot noise sources become the main limiting factors and the effect of thermal noise is much larger than that of shot noise.

Modified quadratic congruence codes for fiber Bragg-grating-based spectral-amplitude-coding optical CDMA systems

This paper proposes an all-fiber fast optical frequency-hop code division multiple access (FFH-CDMA) for high-bandwidth communications. The system does not require an optical frequency synthesizer allowing high communication bit rates. Encoding and decoding are passively achieved by Bragg gratings, Multiple Bragg gratings replace a frequency synthesizer, achieving a hopping rate in tens of GHz. A main lobe sine apodization can be used in writing the gratings to enhance the system capacity and the spectrum efficiency. All network users can use the same tunable encoder/decoder design. The simultaneous utilization of the time and frequency domains offers notable flexibility in code selection. Simulations show that the encoder efficiently performs the FFH spread spectrum signal generation and that the receiver easily extracts the desired signal from a received signal for several multiple access interference scenarios. We measure the system performance in terms of bit error rate, as well as auto-to cross-correlation contrast. A transmission rate of 500 Mb/s per user is supported in a system with up to 30 simultaneous users at 10/sup -9/ bit error rate. We compare FFH-CDMA to several direct sequence-CDMA systems in terms of bit error rate versus the number of simultaneous users. We show that an optical FFH-CDMA system requires new design criteria for code families, as optical device technology differs significantly from that of radio frequency communications.

Passive optical fast frequency-hop CDMA communications system

Spectral-amplitude-coding optical code-division multiple-access (OCDMA) systems are limited by interference between incoherent sources. A detailed analysis of this limit for a system with a balanced receiver is presented. Additional pulse-position modulation (PPM) coding is proposed as a method to improve the system performance beyond this limit. A simple and robust PPM decoding structure is proposed, and the performance analysis of the whole PPM-OCDMA system is presented. The interference-limited performance of the PPM-OCDMA system is found to be superior to that of the original system when the number of simultaneous users is of the order of the PPM word length or larger. In particular, for a PPM word length of two, an increase in spectral efficiency of up to 100% is possible with no change in the signaling rate, data rate, or bit-error rate (BER).

Performance enhancement of spectral-amplitude-coding optical CDMA using pulse-position modulation

The effect of beat noise and other types of additive noise in time-spreading optical-code-division multiple-access (TS-OCDMA) networks is analyzed in this paper. By defining the coherent ratio kt, the ratio of the chip duration to the coherence time of the light source, TS-OCDMA systems are classified into incoherent, partially coherent, and coherent systems. The noise distributions and the bit-error rates are derived, and system performance is discussed for different cases. The performance of coherent systems is limited by the beat noise. With increasing kt, the effect of beat noise decreases in incoherent systems, and they eventually become free of beat noise. Possible solutions to the beat noise problem in coherent and partially coherent systems are also proposed and discussed.

The performance of optical CDMA systems based on the spectral-amplitude coding of broadband sources is shown to be limited by the optical beat noise between the sources The limits derived here are significantly lower than previous performance estimates which did not include this beat noise Even under ideal conditions, the total throughput is approximately inversely proportional to the number of possible simultaneous users
