Publisher Summary Orchids are considered to have magical properties and medicinal values. The Orchidaceae is a vast family, with staggering 20,000–30,000 orchids, in specific with 600–800 genera and 25,000–35,000 species. In context to size, orchids range from the few millimeters and grams to several meters and tons. They are soft, delicate, and herbaceous or can be hard and nearly woody. Their pollination ranges from natural selfing to pseudocopulation in one and the same or different species. Fertilization does not immediately follow pollination in orchids and can occur in days, weeks, or even months after the flowers have been pollinated. The fruits develop slowly and can take a year or more to ripen. Carbon fixation patterns include C3, C4, and CAM. The chemical diversity and adaptive features of the orchids are enormous. They can be found in all climatic regions and most niches populated by flowering plants (except under water). The most surprising feature of orchids is that it can be compiled from studies of relatively few species by a limited number of investigators.

Aspects of the Physiology of Orchids

This review presents an update on the current knowledge of the secondary metabolite potential of the major fungal species used in industrial biotechnology, i.e., Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus oryzae, and Trichoderma reesei. These species have a long history of safe use for enzyme production. Like most microorganisms that exist in a challenging environment in nature, these fungi can produce a large variety and number of secondary metabolites. Many of these compounds present several properties that make them attractive for different industrial and medical applications. A description of all known secondary metabolites produced by these species is presented here. Mycotoxins are a very limited group of secondary metabolites that can be produced by fungi and that pose health hazards in humans and other vertebrates when ingested in small amounts. Some mycotoxins are species-specific. Here, we present scientific basis for (1) the definition of mycotoxins including an update on their toxicity and (2) the clarity on misclassification of species and their mycotoxin potential reported in literature, e.g., A. oryzae has been wrongly reported as an aflatoxin producer, due to misclassification of Aspergillus flavus strains. It is therefore of paramount importance to accurately describe the mycotoxins that can potentially be produced by a fungal species that is to be used as a production organism and to ensure that production strains are not capable of producing mycotoxins during enzyme production. This review is intended as a reference paper for authorities, companies, and researchers dealing with secondary metabolite assessment, risk evaluation for food or feed enzyme production, or considerations on the use of these species as production hosts.

Sesquiterpenoid stress compounds of the solanaceae

In recent years studies of plant disease resistance have concentrated on active resistance rather than on those mechanisms which rely on structural barriers such as the cuticle. This change has led to the detection and isolation of several post-infectional antifungal compounds, known collectively as phytoalexins, and to their implication as major factors in the disease resistance of several plant species. These substances were first discussed by Muller & Borger (1940) although it is only during the last decade that concerted attempts have been made by plant pathologists and biochemists to support or refute their hypothesis.

Phytoalexins and other natural products as factors in plant disease resistance

Biologische Versuche zeigten, dass unter dem Einfluss gewisser Krankheitserreger in Orchideenknollen Abwehrstoffe produziert werden. Am Beispiel der Orchis militayis L. und des Krankheitserregers Rhizoctonia repens BERX. wurde gezeigt, dass offenbar als einziger Abwehrstoff Orchinol C16H16O3 neben dem biologisch p-aktiven p-Hydroxybenzylalkohol entsteht; beide Verbindungen, die sich in minimalen Mengen nachweisen liessen, waren in gesunden Pflanzen nicht enthalten. Die Orchidee Loyoglossurn hircinurn L. erzeugt kein Orchinol sondern andere Abwehrstoffe gegen Rhizcxtonia repens. Aus infizierten Loroglossum-Knollen konnte eine biologisch inaktive, dem Orchinol isomere und strukturell nahestehende Verbindung C16H16O3, welche als Loroglossol bezeichnet wurde, isoliert werden.

Uber Derivate und Abbauprodukte gelang die eindeutige Festlegung der funktionellen Gruppen in Lycomarasmin, Lycomarasminsaure und Anhydro-lyco-marasminsaure (Substanz J), sowie die Ermittlung der L-Konfiguration im Asparaginsaure-Teil dieser Verbindungen. Durch Kombination der neuen Erkenntnisse mit den Ergebnissen fruherer Untersuchungen konnten fur die erwahnten Verbindungen je 2 Strukturformeln abgeleitet werden. NMR.-Spektren erlaubten die uberzahligen Varianten auszuschliessen und jeder der 3 Verbindungen die richtige Konstitutionsformel, bis auf die absolute Konfiguration eines einzigen C-Atoms, zuzuschreiben.

Das aus Kulturen von Endothia parasitica (MURR.) AND. isolierte, optisch aktive Welketoxin Diaporthin C13H14O5 gab mit Alkali Acetaldehyd und optisch inaktive Diaporthinsaure. deren Bruttoformel auf C11H12O5 berichtigt wurde. Die Interpretation der NMR.-Spektren fuhrte zu den Strukturformeln von Diaporthin (I) und Diaporthinsaure (III), welche durch Synthese der letzteren bewiesen wurden.

Aus der Kulturflussigkeit von Endothia parasitica (Murr.) And. konnte erstmals in reiner Form ein neues Welketoxin, das Diaporthin isoliert werden. Diaporthin ist optisch aktiv, hat die Bruttoformel C13H14O5, schmilzt bei 91,5–92,5° und gibt nach Einwirkung von Alkali im UV. eine intensiv hellviolette Fluoreszenz, wodurch es noch in kleinsten Mengen (0,01 γ) nachgewiesen werden kann. Im Welketest an Tomatensprossen ist Diaporthin mit der Dosis minima von 220 mg/kg etwas weniger wirksam als Lycomarasmin und Fusarinsaure. Ein in geringer Menge isoliertes Nebenprodukt gleicher Bruttozusammensetzung C13H14O5 und einige Derivate des Diaporthins werden beschrieben.
