Infrared absorption spectra of sodium phosphate glasses, Na2O=30–50 mol%, have been studied in the region of 400–2000 cm−1. Spectra were analyzed to determine the relative intensity of the IR bands responsible for the different phosphate units. Spectral analyses has shown that the substitution of P2O5 by Na2O influences the intermediate range order of the glass matrix. Increasing Na2O content leads to a gradual degradation of the phosphate ring type structures, with consequent depolymerization causing compaction of the glass matrix. Analyses of IR spectra illustrates the reorganization effects of Na2O in the phosphate matrix.

Types of “H2O” in human enamel and in precipitated apatites are characterized using X-ray diffraction, infrared (IR) absorption spectroscopic and thermogravimetric analyses. Changes in lattice parameters (principally in the α-axis dimensions) and in the character of the IR absorption bands are correlated with weight losses at pyrolysis temperatures of 100° to 400°C and with effect of rehydration and reignition of previously ignited samples.

Monolayer and multilayer thin films consisting of anionic α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) sheets and polycations (poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), cytochrome c) were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ellipsometry, UV−visible absorbance spectroscopy, reflectance FT-IR, XPS, and X-ray diffraction. Titration and powder X-ray diffraction experiments confirm that exfoliation of α-ZrP begins to occur when enough tetra(n-butylammonium) hydroxide (TBA+OH-) has been added to exceed single-layer packing of TBA+ ions (x ≈ 0.50) in the intercalation compound Zr(HPO4)2-x(TBA+PO4-)x·nH2O. The identical contrast of many sheets in TEM micrographs suggests that the suspension is unilamellar. Alternately dipping cationic substrates into α-ZrP-containing suspensions and aqueous PAH gives a multilayer film that resembles the corresponding bulk intercalation compound. Characterization of Zirconium Phosphate/Polycation Thin Films Grown by Sequential Adsorption Reactions

The infrared and visible spectra of glasses in the Ag2OP2O5 glass-forming system were obtained. The infrared data were interpreted as indicating the presence of polymeric chains in these glasses. The partial covalent nature of the AgOP bond was discussed. A mixed NaPO3AgPO3 glass showed no unexpected bands in the infrared spectrum, again showing that silver is behaving in a manner similar to alkali metal ions in phosphate glasses. The shift in the absorption edge in the visible spectra of glasses of different Ag/P ratio was shown to arise from either an increase in the concentration of nonbridging oxygens with increasing silver content, or the presence of colloidal silver metal particles.
