Journal ArticleDOI

Behavioral Responses of Broilers to Different Gaseous Atmospheres

TL;DR: The experiment did not indicate that broilers could detect or avoid increased CO2 or decreased O2 levels when they come into contact with such atmospheres for the first time.
Journal ArticleDOI

Percussion and electrical stunning of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) after dewatering and subsequent effect on brain and heart activities

TL;DR: It is concluded that if sufficient force is used the fish will be rendered unconscious insensible which result in damage of the carcass, whereas a combined AC and DC can be recommended source for dry electrical head to body stunning.
Journal ArticleDOI

Assessment of electrical stunning in fresh water of African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) and chilling in ice water for loss of consciousness and sensibility

TL;DR: It was observed that unconscious and insensibility can be induced instantaneously by electrical stunning in fresh water and live chilling of African catfish which resulted in an extremely high heart rate (tachycardia).
Journal ArticleDOI

Pain behaviour after castration of piglets; effect of pain relief with lidocaine and/or meloxicam.

TL;DR: Wound healing was rapid in all treatments, but thickening of the heal was observed in several piglets, suggesting perturbation in the cicatrization process, and a pain-relieving effect of meloxicam after castration was showed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Welfare aspects of live chilling and freezing of farmed eel (Anguilla anguilla L.): neurological and behavioural assessment

TL;DR: The obtained results show that the eels, which were transferred from water at 18 °C to ice water, might be stressed, a specific behaviour and an irregular heart rate were observed, and it is therefore not recommended to stun eels by live chilling.
