Automatic Control of an Overhead Crane

Different approaches of a learnable fuzzy-logic (FL) concept for highly fast and accurate position control of industrial robots are presented which provide both time-optimality for large position errors as well as well damped response (no overshoot) near the target. For automatic optimization of the control parameters an additional neural-network component is introduced. Based on simulation and experiments the performance and robustness of the presented FL concept are discussed.

A fuzzy-logic concept for highly fast and accurate position control of industrial robots

The author describes the results of an investigation into the application of variable damping (where the damping is varied as a function of the system states) to improve the time response of an overhead crane which uses linear feedback to control the load swing. The resulting system is unique because the overhead crane has fourth-order dynamics and variable damping is usually only applied to second-order systems. A contour map approach (based on computer simulations) is devised to shape the damping function, and it is also used to develop a general tuning strategy for the system. Variably damped swing control of the overhead crane

Two independent studies have been made into the man-machine systems aspects of crane control. The studies have been concerned with the analysis of a hoist operation as part of a metal-processing plant group task and the modelling of a crane operator as an element in an electric overhead travelling crane system. The unification of the results of these studies gives a comprehensive view of a crane operator's ability to control a crane system manually. The crane operator, as a complex and versatile information processor and feedback controller, utilizes aids and cues from many sources to enable him to perform his task in a skilful manner. It is suggested that the development of skill in an operator is akin to the progression in servo mechanism theory from compensatory tracking to pursuit tracking and then finally to open-loop tracking.
