Cervical cancer, a disease of poverty: mortality differences between urban and rural areas in Mexico
Lina Sofía Palacio-Mejía,Gudelia Rangel-Gómez,Mauricio Hernández-Ávila,Eduardo Lazcano-Ponce +3 more
TL;DR: CC mortality is associated with poverty-related factors, including lack of formal education, unemployment, low socio-economic level, rural residence and insufficient access to healthcare, which indicates the need for eradication of regional differences in cancer detection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparison of Urine Cotinine and the Tobacco-Specific Nitrosamine Metabolite 4-(Methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-Pyridyl)-1-Butanol (NNAL) and Their Ratio to Discriminate Active From Passive Smoking
Maciej L. Goniewicz,Mark D. Eisner,Eduardo Lazcano-Ponce,Wioleta Zielińska-Danch,Bartosz Koszowski,Andrzej Sobczak,Christopher Havel,Peyton Jacob,Neal L. Benowitz +8 more
TL;DR: Both urine cotinine and NNAL are sensitive and specific biomarkers for discriminating the source of tobacco smoke exposure when biomarkers are measured while a person has ongoing exposure to tobacco smoke.
Journal ArticleDOI
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) L1 Serum Antibodies and the Risk of Subsequent Oral HPV Acquisition in Men: The HIM Study
Christine M. Pierce Campbell,Raphael P. Viscidi,B. Nelson Torres,Hui-Yi Lin,William J. Fulp,Martha Abrahamsen,Eduardo Lazcano-Ponce,Luisa L. Villa,Aimée R. Kreimer,Anna R. Giuliano +9 more
TL;DR: Oral rinses for HPV DNA and baseline sera for HPV-6, -11, -16, and -18 L1 antibodies and Cox models revealed that men with circulating antibodies to HPV- 6, - 11, - 16, or -18 were not less likely to acquire type-specific oral HPV than men without antibodies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Impact of baseline covariates on the immunogenicity of a quadrivalent (types 6, 11, 16, and 18) human papillomavirus virus-like-particle vaccine.
Anna R. Giuliano,Eduardo Lazcano-Ponce,Luisa L. Villa,Terry Nolan,Colin D. Marchant,David Radley,Greg Golm,Kathleen McCarroll,Jimmy Yu,Mark T. Esser,Scott Vuocolo,Eliav Barr +11 more
TL;DR: Age at vaccination initiation was inversely proportional to the vaccine-induced anti-HPV response, and data support vaccination with quadrivalent HPV vaccine across a broad range of baseline subject characteristics.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nutritional Determinants of Epithelial Ovarian Cancer Risk: A Case-Control Study in Mexico
Eduardo Salazar-Martínez,Eduardo Lazcano-Ponce,Guillermo Gonzalez Lira-Lira,Pedro Mario Escudero-de los Ríos,Mauricio Hernández-Ávila +4 more
TL;DR: The diet of the Mexican population is rich in carbohydrates; in Mexico corn intake is the main energy source, and vitamins such as retinol and vitamin D were shown to be associated with this neoplasm in a protective way; nevertheless, further studies are necessary to allow us to corroborate the results.
