This review critically examines 15 empirical studies, conducted since the mid-1980s, on the effects of support, guidance, and orientation programs—collectively known as induction—for beginning teachers. Most of the studies reviewed provide empirical support for the claim that support and assistance for beginning teachers have a positive impact on three sets of outcomes: teacher commitment and retention, teacher classroom instructional practices, and student achievement. Of the studies on commitment and retention, most showed that beginning teachers who participated in induction showed positive impacts. Increasingly, research confirms that teacher and teaching quality are the most powerful predictors of student success. In short, principals ensure higher student achievement by assuring better teaching. To do this, effective administrators have a new teacher induction program available for all newly hired teachers, which then seamlessly becomes part of the lifelong, sustained professional development program for the district or school. What keeps a good teacher are structured, sustained, intensive professional development programs that allow new teachers to observe others, to be observed by others, and to be part of networks or study groups where all teachers share together, grow together, and learn to respect each other's work.

Examining the examinations : an international comparison of science and mathematics examinations for college-bound students

The purpose of this paper is to explicate characteristics and logic of OSCE in medical education using ethnomethodology and video-ethnography. We will first introduce the methods we use, namely ethnomethodology and video-ethnography. then present our findings from activities and logic of practices that we captured in our research. We will then move to our findings that OSCE is neither a simple medical examination nor a simple assessment of medical knowledge. OSCE is collaboratively achieved as a very distinct activity which can not be called other than OSCE in and through the interaction among all three participants, namely, Medical Student, SP (Simulated Patient), and Examiners.
