MSX satellite observations of thunderstorm-generated gravity waves in mid-wave infrared images of the upper stratosphere

TL;DR: In this paper, the first observations of thunderstorm-generated gravity waves imaged from space have been provided by data from the Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) and two instances of such patterns have been identified.
Journal ArticleDOI

Remote sensing of discrete stratospheric gravity-wave structure at 4.3-µm from the MSX satellite

TL;DR: In this paper, the MSX 4.3-µm spectral region has been imaged by the SPIRIT 3 radiometer on the satellite observing the cloud-free atmosphere.
Journal ArticleDOI

Polar mesospheric clouds: Infrared measurements from the Midcourse Space Experiment

TL;DR: In this paper, the radiance due to the polar mesospheric cloud (PMC) has been isolated from other sources-atmospheric emission, nonrejected off axis radiation from the terrestrial surface and zodiacal radiance-and inverted to determine the volume emission rates of the ice particles at a spatial resolution of 0.5 to 0.3 km in the altitude range from 83.4 to 86.4 km.
Journal ArticleDOI

Midcourse Space Experiment: Off-Axis Rejection Performance of the Infrared Sensor

TL;DR: In this article, the Spatial Infrared Imaging Telescope III (SPIRIT III) sensor on the Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) satellite observed stray radiation from the lower atmosphere and terrestrial surface, nonrejected Earth radiance, at angles of approximately 2 to 14 deg from the optical axis in measurements of Earth limb radiance.
