The article Cannibal Cities: Monstrous Urban Bodies in Contemporary Fantasy discusses the literalization of the metaphor of the body politic in contemporary urban fantasy. The body politic is one of the master tropes through which urban experience has been traditionally represented in literature, political discourse, and social studies. Urban fantasy transforms this metaphor into part of the fictional world of the text, thereby laying bare its cultural connotations, which are predominantly negative and dystopian. Thus a monstrous body is created, which is not that of an individual but rather of the city as a whole. The paper discusses three main registers of representing the monstrous urban body in fantasy: the dark city; the city-as-machine; and the city-as-organism. Each register is illustrated with a range of literary and cinematic examples. Fizjologiczność miasta stała się zatem elementem, za pomocą którego wyrażano i negocjowano relacje społeczne. O ile wyobrażenie miasta jako ciała miało w starożytności i średniowieczu charakter heroiczno-emblematyczny, o tyle wraz z powstaniem industrialnych metropolii stało się ono monstrualne i zniekształcone. Thomas Hardy postrzegał Londyn jako „potwora o ciele czterech milionów głów i ośmiu milionach oczu”2. Niepokojący obraz krwawiącego miasta pojawił się w Londynie Willliama Blake’a (1794), w którym „kiedy żebrzący Żołnierz wzdycha, | Krwią spływa Pałac pozłacany”3 i który powielano później w ciągu całej epoki wiktoriańskiej w coraz bardziej koszmarnych wizjach aglomeracyjnych chorób i rozkładu. Roger Ackroyd w monumentalnym dziele pod tytułem Londyn: Biografia (2000; wyd. polskie 2011) przywołuje to starsze, heroiczne wyobrażenie miejskiego ciała, by zestawić je z mroczniejszą wizją zniekształconej i chorej metropolii: Niezależnie od tego, czy traktujemy Londyn jako młodego człowieka, który budzi się wypoczęty ze snu, czy też ubolewamy nad stanem tego zwyrodniałego olbrzyma, musimy w nim widzieć organizm, którym rządzą prawa życia i rozwoju4. W sposobie reprezentacji ciała miejskiego w literaturze pojawiają się jednak ważne różnice ogólne. Najistotniejszą z nich pozostaje rozbieżność między symboliką a literalnością, albo między realizmem a wyobrażeniowością. Fantastyka miejska (urban fantasy) jest niebywale popularną konwencję, aczkolwiek niełatwą przy tym do zdefiniowania. Przedstawiając ogólny zarys jej genezy, Sarai Mannolini-Winwood stwierdza, że „UF [urban fantasy – przyp. tłumaczki], inaczej niż typowe narracje światotwórcze, przedstawia przyziemny świat zanurzony w nadprzyrodzonej obecności”5.
