This review aims to summarise the progress in some materials and structures for electromagnetic applications, such as microwave absorption, electric shielding and antenna designs, which have been developed in recent years. Composites with spherical powders for microwave absorption focus mainly on those based on ferrites (especially hexagonal), carbonyl iron and related alloys and various newly emerged nanosized materials. Composites with long conductive fibres as fillers will be summarised, with speical attentions to prediction, measurment and evaluation of their performances. Recent progress in some composite materials and structures for specific electromagnetic applications

We investigate, both theoretically and experimentally, a left-handed metamaterial design composed of pairs of short slabs connected with continuous wires, operating in microwave frequency regime. The design was found to give left-handed behavior for a wide range of structure parameters, maintaining high impedance match with free space. We introduce a capacitor-inductor circuit description of the design and we show that this description can account for all the characteristics of its electromagnetic behavior, explaining also its superior performance.

Left-handed metamaterials: The fishnet structure and its variations

The present paper theoretically demonstrates coherent thermal emission in the infrared region by exciting magnetic polaritons between metallic gratings and an opaque metallic film, separated by a dielectric spacer. The coupling of the metallic strips and the film induces a magnetic response that is characterized by a negative permeability and positive permittivity. On the other hand, the metallic film intrinsically exhibits a negative permittivity and positive permeability in the near infrared. This artificial structure is equivalent to a pair of single-negative materials. By exciting surface magnetic polaritons, large emissivity peaks can be achieved at the resonance frequencies and are almost independent of the emission angle. The resonance frequency of the magnetic response can be predicted by an analogy to an inductor and capacitor circuit. The proposed structure can be easily constructed using micro/nanofabrication.

Thermophotovoltaic emitters based on a two-dimensional grating/thin-film nanostructure

We propose a dual-band metamaterial perfect absorber with a metal–insulator–metal structure (MIM) for use in infrared (IR) stealth technology. We designed the MIM structure to have surface plasmon polariton (SPP) and magnetic polariton (MP) resonance peaks at 1.54 μm and 6.2 μm, respectively. One peak suppresses the scattering signals used by laser-guided missiles, and the other matches the atmospheric absorption band, thereby enabling the suppression of long-wavelength IR (LWIR) and mid-wavelength IR (MWIR) signals from objects as they propagate through the air. We analysed the spectral properties of the resonance peaks by comparing the wavelength of the MP peak calculated using the finite-difference time-domain method with that obtained by utilizing an inductor–capacitor circuit model. We evaluated the dependence of the performance of the dual-band metamaterial perfect absorber on the incident angle of light at the surface. The proposed absorber was able to reduce the scattering of 1.54 μm IR laser light by more than 90% and suppress the MWIR and LWIR signatures by more than 92%, as well as maintain MWIR and LWIR signal reduction rates greater than 90% across a wide temperature range from room temperature to 500 °C.

We show that equivalent circuits offer a qualitative and even quantitative simple explanation for the behavior of various types of left-handed (or negative-index) metamaterials. This allows us to optimize design features and parameters while avoiding trial and error simulations or fabrications. In particular, we apply this unifying circuit approach in accounting for the features and in optimizing the structure employing parallel metallic bars on the two sides of a dielectric film.
