Cette these porte sur le rapport des femmes au politique, etudie a travers le prisme de la participation locale des classes populaires. Au Venezuela, sous les gouvernements Chavez, la volonte etatique de favoriser la participation locale et de lutter contre les inegalites de genre, croise et rend visible des dynamiques et des trajectoires individuelles d’acteurs ordinaires, qui sont en majorite des femmes. La politique bolivarienne de la participation se realise a partir de l’experience quotidienne et des relations interpersonnelles. Les structures etatiques locales que sont les Conseils Locaux de Planification Publique et les Conseils Communaux articulent ainsi espace public et espace prive. Dans ce pays matrifocal, la pratique de cette politique territorialisee permet aux femmes des classes populaires de transformer leur autorite en une ressource politique qui est desormais reconnue et institutionnalisee. Ce processus modifie le rapport a soi, a la famille, a la communaute, mais aussi au pouvoir institue, allant jusqu’a transformer les rapports gouvernants-gouvernes. Fruit de sept annees de recherche et de pres de deux ans de terrain, cette these allie les techniques classiques de l’enquete sociologique a de nouveaux outils revelant l’importance du tournant affectif induit par l’experience participative dans la vie des enquetes.

Participation politisation et rapports de genre : changement social en milieu populaire (Venezuela, 2002-2012)

I seek to contribute knowledge about girls’ embodied sense of agency, as well as to provide empirical insights into anti-violence community programming. Rather than a focus on girls as victims, I want to illuminate the conditions of possibility for girls’ exercise of agency. Working with a feminist post-structuralist framework, and drawing heavily on Judith Butler (1990; 1997), I ask: How does anti-violence programming impact girls’ sense of themselves as agential subjects rather than victims, and, hence, as capable of exercising agency in their subjectivization? Which conceptions of agency do girls mobilize, and how do certain identity categories come to bear on how they understand their agency? I understand that existing literature offers little opportunity for “girls to be a part of the production of knowledge regarding their own lives” (Hussain et al. 2006). As such, my methodology centers on girls’ voices, using focus groups to engage 13 girls aged 16-21, who took part in an anti-violence program offered through a community centre located in a mid-sized city in South Western Ontario. While I did not set out to specifically study the experiences of teen mothers, it became an important focus of the data analysis as 5 of the girls were teen mothers. One significant finding from this research is that the girls tended to experience agency or made sense of their agential capacities in terms that are best understood as negotiations between discourses; engaging in certain relations of power in order to frame their own narrative accounts as embodied, gendered and agential subjects. My research contributes to an understanding of how girls experience subjectivizing power within the context of a community anti-violence programming initiative, and has created space for locating ways in which girls are doing ‘girl’, how they are thinking about and engaging with the discourses on girl, and how this feels agential.

Severe obesity in adolescence negatively impacts upon health and wellbeing. Lifestyle modifications do not usually achieve a sufficient degree or durability of weight loss to mitigate the risk of medical complications. In recent years, metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS), already a well-established treatment for adults with severe obesity, has emerged as an option in adolescents. Controlled studies in this age group have demonstrated substantial and sustained weight loss, improvements in associated health parameters, and a safety profile surpassing that observed in adult patients. This review aims to present published data on the results of MBS in adolescents with a focus on long-term outcomes. Indications for bariatric surgery and aspects of timing in the young person's life are also presented along with safety considerations and factors influencing patient selection for surgery. We conclude, predominantly from short to medium-term outcomes data, that MBS is a safe and valuable therapeutic option for adolescents with severe obesity. Considering the poor health and social wellbeing prognosis in this group, MBS appears to be under-utilized. The need for continued research, multi-professional specialist provision, coherent contemporary clinical guidelines, and routine long-term follow-up in adolescents undergoing MBS is highlighted.
