A developmental framework for the analysis of premarital dyadic formation (PDF) is presented by the time-order interrelating of six pair processes, i.e., the achieving of similarity perception, pair rapport, self-disclosure, role-taking, role-fit, and dyadic crystallization. Empirical linkages between these pair processes are examined as underpinning for a conceptual framework from which developmental hypotheses may be generated and tested for the purpose of establishing construct validity for the PDF Framework.

In recent years the tendency of millions of Americans to depart from the traditional monogamous marriage and to choose group marriage, open-ended marriage, ephemeral relations, homosexuality or cohabitation has been the subject of considerable research (Clayton & Voss, 1977; Glick, 1977; Gordon & Libby, 1976; Libby & Whitehurst, 1977; Strong, 1978). There has been, however, relatively little inquiry into changes in the mate selection process made necessary by the new moral standards and relationships. Traditional mate selection has been defined as the stepwise process of escalating attachment, with sexual intimacy expected only in marriage or engagement (Eshleman, 1971; Greenfield, 1965). Traditional procedures are often inefficient undervarying standards of behavior and differences in degree of relationship commitments.

Automated Go-Betweens: Mate Selection of Tomorrow?

Mate selection barriers beyond individuals' control are presented as reasons for development of formal mate selection networks. These networks foster an atmosphere of acceptance for individuals whose traits are viewed as undesirable in usual face-to-face contacts. Counseling professionals may utilize selected networks as an alternative to "changing)" or "training " their clients. Network processes are described and classified according to the degree of third party involvement and the degree to which anonymity of participants is protected.
