This chapter discusses leading problems linked to energy that the world is now confronting and to propose some ideas concerning possible solutions. Oil deserves special attention among all energy sources. Since the beginning of 1981, it has merely been continuing and enhancing the downward movement in consumption and prices caused by excessive rises, especially for light crudes such as those from Africa, and the slowing down of worldwide economic growth. Densely-populated oil-producing countries need to produce to live, to pay for their food and their equipment. If the economic growth of the industrialized countries were to be 4%, even if investment in the rational use of energy were pushed to the limit and the development of nonpetroleum energy sources were also pursued actively, it would be extremely difficult to prevent a sharp rise in prices. It is evident that it is absolutely necessary to pursue actively the development of coal, natural gas, and nuclear power if a physical shortage of energy is not to block economic growth.

World energy outlook

Models that depict innovation as a smooth, well-behaved linear process badly misspecify the nature and direction of the causal factors at work. Innovation is complex, uncertain, somewhat disorderly, and subject to changes of many sorts. Innovation is also difficult to measure and demands close coordination of adequate technical knowledge and excellent market judgment in order to satisfy economic, technological, and other types of constraints—all simultaneously. The process of innovation must be viewed as a series of changes in a complete system not only of hardware, but also of market environment, production facilities and knowledge, and the social contexts of the innovation organization.

The view from the workplace: Safety and Health in Micro and Small Enterprises in the EU - European Risk Observatory - National Report: Italy

The purpose of this research is to investigate the policy instruments and mechanisms that promote the dissemination of three Italian national programmes, and to study the contribution of intermediaries in enabling these mechanisms within the specific context of Italian micro- and small-sized enterprises. Results show that some mechanisms are irrelevant in the dissemination of programmes because they are not supported by the activities of intermediaries; other mechanisms instead are better aligned with the role of intermediaries in the Italian context, so that they are much more effective. The study provides useful information both to improve the dissemination of existing programmes and to clarify to researchers and practitioners how the knowledge gained can be used in the design of new Italian (but not limited to) intervention programmes.

Comparing Programme Theory and Intermediaries' Views: Assessment of OSH Programmes in Italy

This research, anchoring on supply chain configuration data of Italian best performer valve suppliers, achieved from previous published studies, aims to provide a new competitive boost to Italian engineered valve suppliers within the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) supply chain of the Oil & Gas sector. This research, through the matching of the most effective and significant supply chain configuration practices enabled by best performer valve suppliers with EPC clients' wishes towards the improvement of the valve value chain, provides actionable guidelines to increase the supply chain competitiveness of suppliers of the valve industry. This paper offers a practical support to valve suppliers that need to effectively and rapidly reconfigure their supply chain and gain a new competitive edge. Moreover, the proposed research methodology can be a theoretical base to improve the supplier base of other EPC supply chains.
