Local flexibility markets: Literature review on concepts, models and clearing methods

The distribution network operator is usually responsible for increasing the efficiency and reliability of network operation. The target of active loss minimization is in line with efficiency improvement. However, this approach may not be the best way to decrease the losses payments in an unbundled market environment. This paper investigates the differences between loss minimization and loss payment minimization strategies. It proposes an effective approach for decreasing the losses payment considering the uncertainties of electricity prices in a day ahead energy market using energy storage systems and demand response. In order to quantify the benefits of the proposed method, the evaluation of the proposed technique is carried out by applying it on a 33-bus distribution network.

Optimal DR and ESS Scheduling for Distribution Losses Payments Minimization Under Electricity Price Uncertainty

Trend-setting countries have promoted or even employed an increased number of electric vehicles (EVs) and other distributed energy resources (DERs) in their power systems. This development has triggered new and increasing challenges in the distribution system planning and operation, whereby the distribution systems must adapt to the increased share of DERs. However, EVs may also offer new opportunities and can be used to support the grid by providing several local and global power- and energy-based services. This paper presents a review and classification of the services potentially available from EVs for distribution systems, referred to as EV distribution system services (EV-DSS). A detailed description of recent services and approaches is given, and an assessment of the maturity of EV-DSS is provided. Moreover, challenges and prospects for future research are identified, considering key topics, such as the design of the market framework, economic assessment, battery degradation, and the impacts of the transmission system operator service provision by EVs on distribution networks. Thus, this paper offers a tool for stakeholders concerning services available from EVs and provides a broad literature framework that can be used as a base for further investigations. It is aligned with the current requirements to move toward the realistic implementations of EV-DSS.

A set of roles for the evolving business of electricity distribution

The energy sector is undergoing a structural transition due to the increasing share of Distributed Renewable Energy Sources. One of the main stakeholders is the Distribution System Operator (DSO) because of the massive investments that are needed at DSO level. Despite the urgency, studies show a declining DSO investment effort indicating that barriers exist that hamper innovative investments by DSOs. The goal of this article is to explain the link between innovation, investments and the regulatory framework. Relevant financial, structural and behavioral barriers are discussed and their underlying dimensions are clarified. Suggestions are made how the regulatory framework could support DSOs innovative behavior and resulting investment decisions. This study supports the view that the regulatory framework is able to facilitate innovation by using an integrated approach combining both financial and non-financial measures.
