Looking back to the introductory section, it appears that in recent years appreciable progress has been made in understanding and controlling the process of spherical recognition of alkali and alkaline-earth cations by organic ligand molecules. Information stored in various structural features allows the thermodynamic and kinetic features of the complexation process to be monitored. Further progress may be achieved by making use of the feedback from present results to adjust and improve the model and to analyze the information-property relationship.

Group 3 metal catalysts for ethylene and α-olefin polymerization

Starting from differently substituted boronic acids as versatile building block, new "ortho-aryl" alpha-diimine ligands a-h were synthesized in an easy, high-yielding route. Reaction of the complex precursor diacetylacetonato-nickel(II) with a trityl salt, like [CPh3] [B(C6F5)4] or [CPh3] [SbCl6], in the presence of the diimine ligands afford the monocationic, square planar complexes 2a-g in almost quantitative yields. Suitable crystals (2d',e,f,g) were submitted for X-ray diffraction analysis. A geometry model was developed to describe the orientation of ligand fragments around the nickel(II) center that influence the polymer microstructure. At elevated reaction temperature and pressure, and in the presence of hydrogen, 2a-e catalyze the homopolymerization of ethylene to give branched PE products ranging from HD- to LLD-PE grades. The polymerization results indicate the possibility of precise microstructure control depending on the particular complex substitution. Preliminary investigations on material density and mechanical behavior by uniaxial stretching until failure point toward new material properties that can result from the simple ethylene monomer by catalyst design.

The IR emittance of liquids relative to a blackbody is dependent on the reflectivity at the surface of the sample. This dependency leads to distortions in the bandshapes except when the absorption coefficient or the sample thickness is very low. The use of an opaque (i.e. very thick) sample as a reference eliminates the distortions in the bandshapes. A new emittance ɛ* = (emission of a thin sample)/(emission of an opaque sample) has been introduced. A theoretical analysis as well as experimental work on chloroaluminate melts demonstrate that the emittance ɛ* gives a better representation of the ideal sample property of interest, i.e., the internal transmittance of the sample, than the usual emittance with a blackbody as a reference.
