TL;DR: Length of growing season and time requirement for foliar development appear to be a principle factor in the carbon balance of deciduous species and a higher water use efficiency was found for similar atmospheric conditions in spring than in autumn.
Abstract: CO2-assimilation and leaf conductance of Larix decidua Mill. were measured in the field at high (Patscherkofel, Austria) and low (Bayreuth, Germany) elevation in Europe, and outside its natural range along an altitudinal gradient in New Zealand.

TL;DR: A difference in wood production is found between Fagus silvatica, Quercus petraea or Fraxinus excelsior.
Abstract: 3 respectively, whereas the comparative figures are 5, 8, or 10 m of wood per hectar and year for Fagus silvatica, Quercus petraea or Fraxinus excelsior (Bonnemann und Röhrig, 1 972) . This difference in wood production contrasts the performance of photosynthesis in conifers and broad leaved trees. Larcher (1971) showed that the maximal rate of net photosynthesis in conifers reache -1 -1 4 5 mg C02 g h and it is thus much lower than the maximal rate of net photosynthesis in broad leaved trees, which ranges
