TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compare the economic outcome and success as self-employed between those who entered self-employment from paid employment, unemployment and inactivity, and find that the unemployed, and even more the inactive, are overrepresented among those who become self -employed.
Abstract: Purpose – Many unemployed people become self‐employed. Self‐employment, however, does not necessarily lead to success. The main objective of the paper is to compare the economic outcome and success as self‐employed between those who entered self‐employment from paid employment, unemployment and inactivity. The question is if individuals who enter self‐employment from a weak position on the labour market are equally successful as those who enter self‐employment from a stronger position.Design/methodology/approach – Micro‐econometric methods are used to estimate first the propensity to become self‐employed in the period 1998‐2002 among Swedish‐born men aged 20‐60 years who were unemployed, inactive or wage earners in 1998, and second, the economic outcome of self‐employment. Economic outcome in 2002 is measured using income from self‐employment and having employees in the firm.Findings – The study finds that the unemployed, and even more the inactive, are overrepresented among those who become self‐employed...

TL;DR: The authors studied how immigrants affect public finance at different levels of government in Denmark and found that non-western immigrants are not well integrated into the labour market, many are outside the labour force altogether, and unemployment is high among those in the labor force.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the national composition of the employees and asked if self-employed immigrants mainly employ workers from their home region and if selfemployed natives mainly employ native workers.
Abstract: Using unique register data for Sweden we can match self-employed persons to their employees We analyze the national composition of the employees and ask if self-employed immigrants mainly employ workers from their home region and if self-employed natives mainly employ native workers We find that both natives and immigrants are more likely to employ co-nationals than to employ workers with a different national background We also analyze which factors influence the propensity to hire co-nationals For immigrants we find that living in a municipality with a high share of co-nationals decreases the probability of employing natives, while the probability that natives employ immigrants increases with the immigrant share in the municipality We find that the probability for immigrants to hire native workers increases with time spent in Sweden This result points to that the proximity to people from the same region and possibly also one's network plays an important role for the employment decisions for both self-employed natives and immigrants

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a survey of the Lohnersatzleistungen in Schweden in Tarifvereinbarungen zwischen Gewerkschaften and Arbeitgeberorganisationen.
