Objective. To assess the self-esteem of nursing students and explore its relationship with professional training factors that could affect it. Methodology. Descriptive research, involving 135 nursing students at a university in the South of the state of Minas Gerais (Brazil). Data collection was performed between May and September 2011, using a self-report form that collected information about the sociodemographic characteristics and satisfaction with the career chosen, as well as the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Results. From the total, 90% of students were female, 41% were 20 years of age or younger, and 96% were single. One in each three was taking the first year of their program. Concerning the self-esteem level, 68% presented high self-esteem, 30% average and 2% low. A positive relationship was found between the level of self-esteem and professional perspective (p=0.011). Conclusion. Most nursing students presented high self-esteem, which was related to the professional perspective.

El abandono de la carrera entre los enfermeros esta causando preocupacion, pues hasta la conclusion del curso, han invertido el Estado, la familia y el individuo. La gravedad de la situacion se acentua por la escasez de enfermeros ejerciendo la profesion. En una muestra intencional de enfermeros, su opinion sobre los motivos que les inducieron a dejar de practicar la enfermeria, y los conocimientos de enfermeria que utilizan en el cumplimiento de sus actividades. Se identificaron igualmente, las sugerencias que hicieron para evitar la evasion. En las respuestas, verificamos que el abandono esta basado en un conjunto de circunstancias desde las estrictamente personales y de la formacion hasta las derivadas de la estructura social y politica del Pais.

Enfermeros que dejaron de ejercer la enfermería: por qué?

This study compared the self-management behaviors of parents with asthmatic children staying in two hospitals and explored barriers to self-management behaviors by interviewing. 227 parents were recruited for quantitative analysis by completing a self-report structured questionnaire, 94 of these parents were from the Taipei area and 133 were from the Taoyuan area. Sixteen parents were interviewed from this population. The results indicated that the parents in the Taoyuan area had younger age, lower socioeconomic status (SES), and higher exercise limitations for children. Their knowledge, enabling factors, and self-management behaviors were also lower than their counterparts in the Taipei area. The determining factors of self-management behaviors were socioeconomic status, self-efficacy, sources of education, and perceived effectiveness (Adjusted R^2=.593) in 227 parents. Six major themes about the influencing factors of self-management were deduced from the interview data: lack of understanding and dislike of the asthma label, less self-perceived severity, lack of understanding about asthma medication, lack of confidence in environmental controls, financial burden of anti-mite products, and doubt about effectiveness. Three major barriers to self-management behaviors of parents in the Taoyuan area were inconsistent use of alternative treatments, overdependence on medical service, and lack of use of peak flow meter. Parents with asthmatic children living in the Taoyuan area had poorer self-management behaviors than those in the Taipei area, and SES was one of the determining factors. The health beliefs of Taoyuan parents included many misconceptions. Conducting the educational needs assessment through quantitative and qualitative methods could provide proficiency information for designing educational content approprite to specific populations.

A comparison, by quantitative and qualitative methods, between the self-management behaviors of parents with asthmatic children in two hospitals.

The study intended to analyze the conceptions of academics of Nursing about the nurse's work. Through a questionnaire with students of the first, fifth and nineth semesters, it was verifyed that the answers of the students of the last semester are closer to the practice of the profission, because these students see the nurse as key of the work in health. The academics of the first semester mention only the humanitarian dimension of the work. And the ones of the fifth semester evidence the administration of the care and the work in group as actual in the daily one of the nurse. It can be affirmed that education plays an important role in the construction of the conceptions of the students, having, since early, to approach them of the reality of the practical professional.

Concepções de acadêmicos de enfermagem sobre o que é ser enfermeiro

A asma e uma patologia cronica caracterizada por episodios recorrentes de obstrucao das vias aereas. O objetivo do estudo consiste em avaliar o conhecimento dos pacientes asmaticos e os possiveis impactos sobre o manejo da doenca. Foi realizado um estudo qualitativo utilizando entrevista como instrumento. A amostra foi constituida por 30 pacientes asmaticos, que apresentaram crise, seguida de internacao em Unidades de Pronto-Atendimento de Coronel Fabriciano, Ipatinga e Timoteo, em junho e julho de 2005. O conhecimento apresentado pelos sujeitos da pesquisa era regular e estava relacionado ao contato previo com os fatores desencadeantes. Consequentemente, o manejo da crise asmatica nao estava adequado. Esses resultados demonstram a importância do desenvolvimento de acoes de educacao em asma pelas equipes de saude.

Conocimiento y impacto sobre el manejo de las crisis de los portadores de asma

Estudo qualitativo que teve como objetivos: Identificar os fatores significativos na formacao do enfermeiro; descortinar o perfil do enfermeiro na percepcao do graduando; conhecer as perspectivas dos enfermeirandos quanto ao seu amanha profissional. Teve como sujeitos 12 alunos concluintes do Curso de Graduacao em Enfermagem de tres Universidades de Pernambuco. Foram realizadas entrevistas gravadas e observacao assistematica, nos meses de marco e abril de 2003. Como resultados foram construidas as seguintes categorias: Escolha pela profissao de enfermagem; envolvimento com a formacao profissional; reflexoes quanto a formacao academica e perspectivas em relacao ao futuro profissional.

This research aims at the systematization of nursing assistance under Orem's nursing theory of self-care deficit. In order to conduct this study, the convergent approach was used through the performance of the nursing processes in an adult with asthma. Interviews, physical examinations, observations, data record, observation of nursing assistance in policlinics along with home visits were the techniques used to gather data. After the observation of the nursing assistance, self-care deficits were identified and a new assistance plan and objectives were established, as well as a system and methods of support. The assistance plan was performed through the implementation of nursing assistance, prioritizing educational support. Based on the results, it was concluded that the application of the nursing processes through Orem's self-care referential is feasible and necessary for the engagement of clients and their family in self-care.
