Advances in polymers for anti-biofouling surfaces

Water contains tremendous energy in a variety of forms, but very little of this energy has yet been harnessed. Nanostructured materials can generate electricity on interaction with water, a phenomenon that we term the hydrovoltaic effect, which potentially extends the technical capability of water energy harvesting and enables the creation of self-powered devices. In this Review, starting by describing fundamental properties of water and of water–solid interfaces, we discuss key aspects pertaining to water–carbon interactions and basic mechanisms of harvesting water energy with nanostructured materials. Experimental advances in generating electricity from water flows, waves, natural evaporation and moisture are then reviewed to show the correlations in their basic mechanisms and the potential for their integration towards harvesting energy from the water cycle. We further discuss potential device applications of hydrovoltaic technologies, analyse main challenges in improving the energy conversion efficiency and scaling up the output power, and suggest prospects for developments of the emerging technology. Recent progress on generating electricity from the direct interaction of carbon nanostructures with flowing, waving, dropping and evaporating water is summarized.

Emerging hydrovoltaic technology

Chemical and electrical interaction within and between cells is well established. Just the opposite is true about cellular interactions via other physical fields. The most probable candidate for an other form of cellular interaction is the electromagnetic field. We review theories and experiments on how cells can generate and detect electromagnetic fields generally, and if the cell-generated electromagnetic field can mediate cellular interactions. We do not limit here ourselves to specialized electro-excitable cells. Rather we describe physical processes that are of a more general nature and probably present in almost every type of living cell. The spectral range included is broad; from kHz to the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum. We show that there is a rather large number of theories on how cells can generate and detect electromagnetic fields and discuss experimental evidence on electromagnetic cellular interactions in the modern scientific literature. Although small, it is continuously accumulating.

Electromagnetic cellular interactions.

Interfacial materials with special wettability have become a burgeoning research area in materials science in the past decade. The unique surface properties of materials and interfaces generated by biomimetic approaches can be leveraged to develop effective solutions to challenging environmental problems. This critical review presents the concept, mechanisms, and fabrication techniques of interfacial materials with special wettability, and assesses the environmental applications of these materials for oil-water separation, membrane-based water purification and desalination, biofouling control, high performance vapor condensation, and atmospheric water collection. We also highlight the most promising properties of interfacial materials with special wettability that enable innovative environmental applications and discuss the practical challenges for large-scale implementation of these novel materials.

Environmental Applications of Interfacial Materials with Special Wettability.

Upon contact with bodily fluids/tissues, exogenous materials spontaneously develop a layer of proteins on their surface. In the case of biomedical implants and equipment, biological processes with deleterious effects may ensue. For biosensing platforms, it is synonymous with an overwhelming background signal that prevents the detection/quantification of target analytes present in considerably lower concentrations. To address this ubiquitous problem, tremendous efforts have been dedicated over the years to engineer protein-resistant coatings. There is now extensive literature available on stealth organic adlayers able to minimize fouling down to a few ng cm−2, however from technologically irrelevant single-protein buffered solutions. Unfortunately, few coatings have been reported to present such level of performance when exposed to highly complex proteinaceous, real-world media such as blood serum and plasma, even diluted. Herein, we concisely review the surface chemistry developed to date to minimize fouling from these considerably more challenging blood-based fluids. Adsorption dynamics is also discussed.
