T he annual bibliography of the Keats-Shelley Journal catalogues recent scholarship related to British Romanticism, with emphasis on secondgeneration writers—particularly John Keats, Percy Shelley, Mary Shelley, Lord Byron, Leigh Hunt, and William Hazlitt. The bibliography includes books, chapters in books, book reviews, articles in journals, other bibliographies, dissertations, and editions of Romantic-era literature and historical documents. The listings are compiled primarily from the catalogues of major British and American publishers and from the tables of contents of books and major journals in the field. The first section of the bibliography lists a wide range of scholarly work on Romanticism that might be of interest to the Journal’s readers, while the subsequent sections list items that deal more specifically with the six aforementioned authors. Because the length of the bibliography precludes my annotating every item, only some entries have annotations—primarily books dealing with the second-generation Romantics. The following bibliography catalogues scholarship for the year 2015, along with the occasional item that inadvertently may have been excluded from the annual bibliography in previous years or that may have arrived too late for inclusion. While I have made every attempt to keep the bibliography accurate and comprehensive, the occasional error or omission is inevitable. Annual Bibliography for 2015

"Feeling British" argues that the discourse of sympathy both encourages and problematizes a sense of shared national identity in eighteenth-century and Romantic British literature and culture. Although the 1707 Act of Union officially joined England and Scotland, government policy alone could not overcome centuries of feuding and ill will between these nations. Accordingly, the literary public sphere became a vital arena for the development and promotion of a new national identity, Britishness. "Feeling British" starts by examining the political implications of the Scottish Enlightenment's theorizations of sympathy the mechanism by which emotions are shared between people. From these philosophical beginnings, this study tracks how sympathetic discourse is deployed by a variety of authors - including Defoe, Smollett, Johnson, Wordsworth, and Scott - invested in constructing, but also in questioning, an inclusive sense of what it means to be British.

Feeling British: Sympathy and National Identity in Scottish and English Writing, 1707-1832

British women’s participation in the Napoleonic Wars was limited in the theaters of warfare, but not in the realms of print. Both the young Felicia Hemans and the older Anna Laetitia Barbauld intervened with poetry in the vigorous public discourse surrounding the ongoing wars with France, albeit with very different motivations and results. Hemans’ little‐studied England and Spain; or, Patriotism and Valour explicitly supports the British participation in the Peninsular War, but runs into complications when Hemans attempts to justify the destruction of past civilizations in the name of Freedom. Despite its immature enthusiasm, Hemans’ poem was well received by critics. Barbauld’s better‐known Eighteen Hundred and Eleven, by contrast, was famously reviled by John Wilson Croker for drawing attention to the costs of war and, even more grievously, foretelling Britain’s eventual decline and overshadowing by the Americas.
