We investigate whether income inequality affects subsequent growth in a cross-country sample for 1965-90, using the models of Barro (1997), Bleaney and Nishiyama (2002) and Sachs and Warner (1997), with negative results. We then investigate the evolution of income inequality over the same period and its correlation with growth. The dominating feature is inequality convergence across countries. This convergence has been significantly faster amongst developed countries. Growth does not appear to influence the evolution of inequality over time. Outline

The impact of tourism developments on CO2 emissions: An advanced panel data estimation

Financial development has been deemed to be an important factor influencing carbon emissions; however, the specific effect generated by financial development is still disputed. In this study, we examined the relationship between financial development and carbon emissions based on a system generalized method of moments and the data of 155 countries, and we further analyzed the national differences by dividing the sample countries into two sub-groups: developed countries, and emerging market and developing countries. The empirical results indicated that from a global perspective, financial development could significantly increase carbon emissions, and the analysis of the emerging market and developing countries reached the same conclusion; however, the results indicated that for developed countries, the effect of financial development on carbon emissions is insignificant. A series of robustness checks were conducted and confirmed that our empirical results were reliable. We suggest that policymakers in emerging market and developing countries should carefully balance financial development and environmental protection, as financial development will promote carbon emissions before countries reach a relatively high development level.

The Impact of Financial Development on Carbon Emissions: A Global Perspective

This study examines the impact of economic growth, energy consumption, trade openness, financial development on carbon emissions for the case of Turkey by using annual time series data for the period of 1960-2013. The Lee and Strazicich test suggests that the variables are suitable for applying the bounds testing approach to cointegration. The cointegration analysis reveals that there exists a long-run relationship between the per capita real income, per capita energy consumption, trade openness, financial development, and per capita carbon emissions in the presence of structural breaks. The results show that in the long run, carbon emissions are mainly determined by economic growth, energy consumption, trade openness, and financial development. The VECM Granger causality analysis indicates a long-run unidirectional causality running from economic growth, energy consumption, trade openness, and financial development to carbon emissions. The findings also show that the EKC hypothesis is valid for Turkey both in the long run and short run. The study provides some implications for policy makers to decrease carbon emissions in Turkey.

The impact of economic growth, energy consumption, trade openness, and financial development on carbon emissions: empirical evidence from Turkey

In recent years, theoretical and empirical studies in the economic growth literature emphasize the role of human capital in the process of economic growth. In general, most of the empirical studies have centered on the relation between education and economic growth. In this study, the effect of health on economic growth has been tested by a panel data analysis. This study consists of annual data of 15 OECD countries for the period from 1990 to 2006. In the analyses, the share of public health expenditures in total health expenditures as well as other explanatory variables has been employed. The relationship between health expenditures and economic growth was estimated in Pooled Regression Model by the panel OLS method. As a result, we haven’t found any statistically significant relationship between health expenditures and economic growth.

Sağlık Harcamalarının Ekonomik Büyüme Üzerindeki Etkisi: OECD Ülkeleri Üzerine Bir Panel Regresyon Analizi = The Effect of Health Expenditures on Economic Growth: a Panel Regression Analysis on OECD Countries

This chapter investigates the cointegration and causal relationship between financial development and energy consumption in the case of Turkey over the period 1960-2011. In doing so, the ARDL bounds testing and Johansen-Juselius approaches to cointegration and Granger causality test based on vectorerror correction model are employed. The empirical results show that the series are cointegrated. The empirical results also show a positive and statistically significant relationship between financial development and energy consumption in the long run. In addition, a unidirectional causality running from financial development to energy consumption is found in the short and long run. Thus, this chapter provides an empirical evidence that financial development is a determinant of energy consumption in Turkey. This chapter also presents some implications for Turkey’s energy policy.

Financial Development and Energy Consumption in Turkey: Empirical Evidence from Cointegration and Causality Tests

Bu calismada, saglik harcamalarinin belirleyicileri panel veri metodolojisi kullanilarak Turki Cumhuriyetlerinde 1995-2015 donemi itibariyle arastirilmaktadir. Degiskenler arasindaki esbutunlesme iliskisinin varligi Pedroni ve Kao esbutunlesme testleriyle belirlenmektedir. Degiskenlerin uzun donem katsayilarinin tahmininde Panel Dinamik EKK (PDOLS) tahmin yontemi kullanilmaktadir. Degiskenler arasindaki nedensellik iliskileri ise Panel Hata Duzeltme Modeli (PVECM) Granger nedensellik testi ile analiz edilmektedir. Uygulama sonuclari degiskenler arasinda bir esbutunlesme iliskisinin oldugunu gostermektedir. Elde edilen sonuclar kisi basina saglik harcamalarinin sirasiyla kentlesme, kisi basina reel gelir ve 65 yas ustu nufus tarafindan belirlendigini gostermektedir. Nedensellik analizi sonuclarina gore kentlesme, kisi basina reel gelir, 65 yas ustu nufus ve hekim sayisi ile kisi basina saglik harcamalari arasinda uzun donemde karsilikli bir nedensellik iliskisi soz konusudur. Sonuclar, Turki Cumhuriyetleri icin onemli politika egilimleri sunabilmektedir.
