Journal ArticleDOI
U.s. Geological survey core drilling on the atlantic shelf.
John C. Hathaway,C. Wylie Poag,Page C. Valentine,Frank T. Manheim,F. A. Kohout,Michael H. Bothner,Robert E. Miller,David M. Schultz,Dwight A. Sangrey +8 more
TL;DR: Pore fluid studies showed that relatively fresh to brackish water occurs beneath much of the Atlantic continental shelf, whereas increases in salinity off Georgla and beneath the Florida-Hatteras slope suggest buried evaporitic strata.

"Fresh Ground Water Stored in Aquifers Under the Continental Shelf: Implications from a Deep Test, Nantucket Island, Massachusetts"
F. A. Kohout,John C. Hathaway,D. W. Folger,Michael H. Bothner,E. H. Walker,D. F. Delaney,M. H. Frimpter,E. G. A. Weed,E. C. Rhodehamel +8 more
TL;DR: A deep water resource and stratigraphic test well near the center of Nantucket Island, about 40 miles (64 km) off the New England Coast, has encountered freshwater at greater depth than predicted by the Ghyben-Herzberg principle as discussed by the authors.
