A. Mesozoic time scale

Integration of stress indicator data, gravity data,
crustal kinematics data, and analysis of topography and
recent vertical motions demonstrates the occurrence of
consistently oriented spatial patterns of large-scale
Alpine to recent intraplate deformation in Iberia. The
inferred upper crustal and lithospheric deformation
patterns and the timing of the associated expressions
at or near the surface support the existence of a close
coupling with plate boundary processes operating at
the margins of Iberia. Patterns of lithosphere and
upper crustal folds are oriented perpendicular to the
main axis of present-day intraplate compression in
Iberia inferred from structural analysis of stress
indicator data and focal mechanism solutions. These
findings suggest the presence of lithospheric folds,
with wavelengths compatible with theoretical
predictions of folding wavelengths of Variscan
lithosphere. Stress-induced intraplate deformation
set up by plate interactions is compatible with
indications for the absence of present-day deep
mantle-lithosphere interactions inferred from seismic
tomography.

Meso-Cenozoic geodynamic evolution of the Paris Basin: 3D stratigraphic constraints

A high resolution stratigraphic cross-section of the Bathonian-Callovian is reconstructed from the Paris Basin to the Subalpine Basin. The cross-section (650 km) is built from a total of 50 wells and exposed sections, by correlating genetic units that allows biostratigraphically-constrained time-lines through lithologies and depositional environments to be traced. The cross-section shows: 1) a flexural vs block-tilting control on stratal geometries; 2) block-controlled carbonate-producing areas as well as non-synchronous carbonate drownings; 3) a composite carbonate Burgundy platform; 4) real geometries not fitting with any Exxon type models.

Bathonian-Callovian Paris Basin-Subalpine Basin intercorrelations along an Ardennes-Ardèche cross-section

Volumes of carbonate rocks are computed for Mesozoic platforms over several orders of length scales (reservoir to basin scale) for millions of years time intervals. The calculation is based on the restoration of depositional geometries by correlating genetic sequences and on the estimation of carbonate concentrations from core and well‐log data. The interpolation yields the total amount of carbonate buried in a closed system and represents the net budget of production/preservation of sedimentary carbonate for a given time interval, over a defined area covering several depositional environments. A three‐dimensional (3‐D) accumulation rate is obtained by dividing the total volume of carbonate rocks by the total surface over a time interval derived from biostratigraphic data. Estimates of such a carbonate accumulation rate for various Jurassic and Cretaceous platforms range from 8 to 67 m/m.yr.
