Ein allgemeines Strukturprinzip fur organische Verbindungen, die zur zweistufigen Elektronenubertragung befahigt sind, geht aus der folgenden Reaktionssequenz hervor: 






Dabei konnen ein oder beide X durch Y⊖ ersetzt sein. In diesen Systemen besitzt der radikalische Partner oft sehr grose thermodynamische Stabilitat. Wahl der Endgruppen X und Y, (teilweiser) Einbau des π-Systems in Ringe, Veranderung der Zahl der Vinylengruppen sowie Azasubstitution ermoglichen vielfaltige Variationen. Durch dieses allgemeine Strukturprinzip lassen sich zahlreiche bekannte Verbindungen zusammenfassen und zugleich neue Redoxsysteme entwerfen. Die vorliegende Ubersicht will seinen breiten Gultigkeitsbereich demonstrieren, auf seine Bedeutung fur Wissenschaft und Technik hinweisen und einige Reaktionen beschreiben.

Mehrstufige organische Redoxysteme — ein allgemeines Strukturprinzip

Hyperfine data and g factors are reported for the radical cations of tetrathiafulvalene (TTF; 1) and of its derivatives 2–13. From the intense satellite spectra of 1+–13+ not only the coupling constants of the 33S isotopes in the TTF moiety could be determined, but also, in favourable cases, those of the 13C isotopes in the central double bond. The former values range from 0.370 (8+) to 0.470 mT (4+) and the latter from 0.255 (8+) to 0.360 mT (4+) in the radical cations of bis(ethylenedithio)-TTF (8+) and tetracyano-TTF (4+). The radical cation of TTF (1+) exhibits intermediate values, 0.425 for the 33S and 0.285 mT for the 13C isotopes. The spin population in 1+–13+ resides, to a large extent, in the central S2C CS2 part of the π-system. It tends to increase (decrease) by substitution with electron-accepting (donating) groups in the 2,3,6,7-positions of TTF.

Radical ions of phanes, as studied by ESR and ENDOR spectroscopy

The radical cations and anions of the four lower oligomers of thiophene have been generated and characterized by means of ESR spectroscopy, with the exception of bi- and quinque-thienyl radical cations. cis–trans isomerism about the interannular bonds, similar to that previously reported for 2,2′-dithienyl radical anion, has been observed for terthienyl cation and anion radicals, while no direct evidence of such isomerism could be obtained for quaterthienyl and quinquethienyl.

Radical cations and anions from some simple polythiophenes: an ESR investigation

1,4-Bis(dimethylphosphino)benzol last sich selektiv sowohl zum Radikalanion wie auch zum Radikaltrianion reduzieren — eine Oxidation zum Radikalkation, dem Phosphor-Analogon von Wursters Blau, gelingt dagegen nicht. Die Photoelektronen-Spektren (H3C)2P and (H3C)2N substituierter Benzole und die hochaufgelosten ESR-Spektren ihrer Radikalionen veranschaulichen die unterschiedlichen Akzeptor- oder Donatorwirkungen der beiden Substituenten und geben Auskunft uber die verschiedenartige Ladungsverteilung in den Molekulzustanden der einzelnen Radikalionen.



Radical Ions, XXIII: R2P and R2N Substituted Benzenes: Charge Distribution in Their Cations, Anions, and Trianions



1,4-Bis(dimethylphosphino)benzene can be selectively reduced to the radical anion as well as to the radical trianion — in contrast, no oxidation is possible to the radical cation, the phosphorus analogue of Wursters blue. The photoelectron spectra of (H3C)2P and (H3C)2N substituted benzenes and the high-resolution ESR spectra of their radical ions confirm the differing acceptor or donor effects of the two substituents and yield information on the different charge distribution in the molecular states of the individual radical ions.

Radikalionen, XXIII: R2P‐ und R2N‐substituierte Benzole: Die Ladungsverteilung in ihren Kationen, Anionen und Trianionen

The ESR spectrum of the radical-anion of [18]annulene-1,4;7,10;13,16-trisulfide (ATS) has been recorded. Its analysis yields six coupling constants for pair of equivalent protons indicating the lack of a threefold symmetry axis. A provisional assignment has been attempted which is based on calculated spinpopulations. Conformations of ATS and ATS⊖ are shortly discussed.
