The evolution and future of manufacturing: A review

Inverted pendulum control is one of the fundamental but interesting problems in the field of control theory. This paper describes the steps to design various controllers for a rotary motion inverted pendulum which is operated by a rotary servo plant, SRV 02 Series. In this paper some classical and modern control techniques are analyzed to design the control systems. Firstly, the most popular Single Input Single Output (SISO) system, is applied including 2DOF Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) compensator design. Here the common Root Locus Method is described step by step to design the two compensators of PID controller. Designing the control system using 2DOF PID is quiet challenging task for the rotary inverted pendulum because of its highly nonlinear and open-loop unstable characteristics. Secondly, the paper describes the two Modern Control techniques that include Full State Feedback (FSF) and Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR). Here FSF and LQR control systems are tested both for the Upright and Swing-Up mode of the Pendulum. Finally, experimental and MATLAB based simulation results are described and compared based on the three control systems which are designed to control the Rotary Inverted Pendulum.

Modeling and control of a rotary inverted pendulum using various methods, comparative assessment and result analysis

In this paper, performance-based parameter tuning method of model-driven Two-Degree-of-Freedom PID (MD TDOF PID) control system has been proposed to enhance the control performances of a process. Known for its ability of stabilizing the unstable processes, fast tracking to the change of set points and rejecting disturbance, the MD TDOF PID has gained research interest recently. The tuning methods for the reported MD TDOF PID are based on internal model control (IMC) method instead of optimizing the performance indices. In this paper, an Integral of Time Absolute Error (ITAE) zero-position-error optimal tuning and noise effect minimizing method is proposed for tuning two parameters in MD TDOF PID control system to achieve the desired regulating and disturbance rejection performance. The comparison with Two-Degree-of-Freedom control scheme by modified smith predictor (TDOF CS MSP) and the designed MD TDOF PID tuned by the IMC tuning method demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed tuning method.

Performance-based parameter tuning method of model-driven PID control systems.

This article presents a comprehensive review of control loop performance assessments in the context of building HVAC controls. Few studies are available for assessing HVAC control loop performance using a single control quality factor. A control quality factor should be an objective and quantitative metric with simple-to-interpret criteria and should only use data available from the actual control system, such as the control output. The authors systematically reviewed 34 indices and the associated methods of evaluating control loop performance and cataloged the drawbacks and merits of the different indices. Most of these performance assessment indices are currently used in process control industry applications. There were 14 of the 34 indices selected for further review, due to their particular suitability for implementation in HVAC control loop performance assessment. Designing the feedforward part of 2-d.o.f. industrial controllers for optimal tracking

PID control systems are widely used as a basic control technology for industrial control systems today, due to its well-known simple PID control structure. However, the tuning of the PID control systems is not always easy, because of its simple control structure for wide class of process characteristics. What is a widely applicable and simple process controller with an easy tuning and good control performance? This is a motivation of the paper. Prof. Hidenori Kimura of Univ. of Tokyo proposed "morel driven control (MDC) concept" at CDC2000 Sydney. He defined a model driven control as a control system architecture, which uses a model of the plant as a principal component of controller. PIDrd, PPI (predictive PI), IMC (internal model control) and DMC (dynamic matrix control) belong to a class of MDC. Features of MDC are simple structure, easy tuning approach and proven stability and robustness. Based on the MDC concept, aiming for wide applicability for even unstable processes, we developed a model driven PID control system, named MD PID control system, combining with a PD local feedback, an IMC and a set-point filter. That was one degree of freedom type. In this paper, we propose a new model driven two degrees of freedom PID control scheme, named MD TDOF PID control, in order to obtain better disturbance regulating property by extending conventional MD PID control system. Through some features and some practical field experiments, the MD TDOF PID control system shows good control performances with easy tuning.

A two degrees of freedom PID control system, its features and applications

PID control is widely used as a basic control technology in industries today, but tuning of PID control systems is not always easy. Based on model-driven control concept, we developed a model-driven PID control system, named MD PID controller, combining with PD local feedback, IMC and set point filter. This paper provides a brief introduction of new model driven two-degrees of freedom PID control system, named MD TDOF PID controller, and shows some case studies results. We have confirmed that MD TDOF PID can show better control results compared with conventional PID control.

An energy conservation optimal control system using information network is presented in the paper The special feature of the control system is to control total equipments in a factory for energy conservation at low cost using information networks The control strategy consists of 2 parts (1) Data mining algorithm to examine energy consumption for a factory (2) Optimal control algorithm to control many manipulating values at the same time The algorithm adopts model predictive control method The system performance is tested through energy consumption simulations for the factory whose model is proved by the comparison with measured data for 1 month Finally the system was proved to decrease energy consumption by more than 8% that is our final goal
