Phenomenological theory of the attenuation of neutrons by air ducts in shields

Heat transport at very high temperatures is governed by a nonlinear diffusion equation, and in order to estimate the efficiency of nuclear explosions near the surface of a near earth object (NEO) in the orbit deflecting, it is required to solve the non-linear diffusion equation. Here, the solution is obtained by similarity considerations. It is shown that the earlier (approximate) value of the efficiency obtained by Simonenko et al. of the fraction of absorbed energy to the total incident energy is an overestimate by 60%. Other differences are in the propagation velocity of the thermal front and in the time required for hydrodynamical motion to start.

On the efficiency of nuclear explosives in deflecting the orbits of NEOs

The O5R Monte Carlo neutron transport Code had been used to calculate the neutron albedo for neutrons reflected from plane and curved concrete shields. The present calculations were performed to investigate the fast-neutron albedo in case of ordinary concrete shield, in order to perform comparative studies with the case of neutron reflection against a flat wall. The calculations were performed for three different neutron source energies of 1 MeV, 5 MeV and 15 MeV and at neutron incident angles of 5°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90° and for surfaces with different curvatures (flat, 100, 50, 20 and 5 cm).



The results obtained reveal that there will be an appreciable error on using the flat wall albedo value in the case of duct penetration calculations. The error was assumed to be due to the neglection of the curvature effect as well as to the improper choice of the neutron incident angle.



Albedoberechnungen fur schnelle Neutronen an einem Betonschild unterschiedlicher Krummung



Das O5R Monte Carlo Neutronentransport-Programm wurde benutzt, um die Albedo fur Neutronen, reflektiert von ebenen oder gekrummten Betonschilden, zu berechnen. Diese Berechnungen fur die Albedo schneller Neutronen an gewohnlichen Betonschilden wurden zum Vergleich mit ahnlichen Untersuchungen der Neutronenreflektion an flachen Wanden angestellt. Es wird bei drei verschiedenen Neutronenquellenenergien, 1 MeV, 5 MeV, und 15 MeV, Einfallswinkeln von 5°, 30°, 45°, 60° und 90° sowie fur verschieden gekrummte Oberflachen (flach, 100, 50, 20 und 5 cm) gerechnet.



Diese Ergebnisse zeigen, das die Verwendung von Albedowerten an flachen Wanden fur den Fall von Durchlaskanalen zu betrachtlichen Fehlern fuhrt. Sie konnen sowohl der Vernachlassigung der Krummung als auch der Wahl falscher Einfallswinkel zugeschrieben werden.

Fast Neutron Albedo Calculations for a Concrete Shield with Different Curvatures

In this work the measurement of neutron distributions along and normal to the axis of air filled ducts with different duct diameters pierced in ilmenite concrete have been carried out. The data show the dependence of the neutron doses on the duct length and diameter. The neutron distributions along the duct axis were compared with the corresponding distributions in solid ilmenite concrete.



Semiempirical formulae have been derived fitting well with the experimental data obtained.



Neutronenverteilung in durchbrochenen Betonabschirmungen



Messungen der Neutronenverteilung entlang und senkrecht zur Achse von luftgefullten Durchbruchen verschiedenen Durchmessers in Ilmenitbeton werden vorgestellt. Die Abhangigkeiten der Neutronendosis von Lange und Durchmesser des Durchbruchs werden aufgezeigt. Die Neutronenverteilungen entlang der Durchbruchsachse und in massivem Beton werden verglichen. Die experimentellen Ergebnisse werden in semiempirischen Formeln zusammengefast.

Neutron Distributions in Ducted Egyptian Ilmenite Concrete Shields

In the present work the radial distribution of total gamma doses arising from the interaction of reactor neutrons and gamma radiations inside ilmenite heavy concrete shield are measured. The ilmenite concrete is pierced with neutral beam injector ducts having different diameters and lengths. The results obtained show a relative increase in radial gamma doses at a distance of 10 cm from the neutral beam end. An empirical formula was obtained, fitting the measured gamma doses at the peak position in good agreement within a factor of 1.27. Moreover the variation of the total gamma radiation was measured along straight filled ducted with different diameters and length. The experimental data obtained show a reasonable agreement with calculated ones. The scattered as well as unscattered components of the gamma radiation transmitted through a straight duct were investigated. An empirical formula describing this behaviour was obtained.



Die Untersuchung der γ Dosisverteilung in verschieden konfigurierten Schirmmaterialien mit Durchfuhrungen



In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird die radiale Verteilung der totalen γ -Dosis gemessen, wie sie aus der Wechselwirkung von Reaktorneutronen und γ -Strahlung innerhalb eines Betonschirms entsteht. Der Beton ist mit verschieden grosen und langen Durchfuhrungen versehen. Die erhaltenen Resultate zeigen einen relativen Intensitatspik 10 cm vor Durchfuhrungsende. Eine empirische Formel wird aufgestellt, die diese Verhaltnisse relativ gut (um den Faktor 1.27) wiedergibt. Daruber hinaus wurde die Gamma-Strahlung entlang gerader, gefullter Durchfuhrungen unterschiedlicher Abmessungen gemessen. Ubereinstimmung mit berechneten Werten konnte erzielt werden. Sowohl die gestreuten als auch die ungestreuten Komponenten der Gamma-Strahlung in einer geraden Durchfuhrung wurden untersucht und eine beschriebene, empirische Formel dafur angegeben.

Gamma Dose Distribution Studies in Ducted Shield Material Having Different Configurations

Experimental studies on the angular flux distributions of backscattered thermal neutrons by neutral beam injector ducts (NBID) in ilmenite concrete are performed. The neutron flux distributions have been measured at the end of the ducted assembly and perpendicular to the duct axis by means of Indium thermal detector. The experimental facility and the detector activity measurement techniques are described. Results concerning injector ducts with different diameters are graphically represented. Calculations to analyse the experimental results are given.



Untersuchungen zur Ruckwartsstreuung thermischer Neutronen an Strahldurchfuhrungen in Betonabschirmungen



Die raumliche Ruckwartsstreuung thermischer Neutronen an Strahlungs-durchfuhrungen in Beton wird experimentell untersucht. Die Neutronenflusverteilung wurde am Ende des Durchlasses und senkrecht zu seiner Achse mit einem Indiumthermaldetektor gemessen. Die experimentelle Technik wird beschrieben, und die Resultate fur verschiedene Durchlasdurchmesser graphisch dargestellt und analysiert.
