Data Mining Practical Machine Learning Tools and Techniques

The automated categorization (or classification) of texts into predefined categories has witnessed a booming interest in the last 10 years, due to the increased availability of documents in digital form and the ensuing need to organize them. In the research community the dominant approach to this problem is based on machine learning techniques: a general inductive process automatically builds a classifier by learning, from a set of preclassified documents, the characteristics of the categories. The advantages of this approach over the knowledge engineering approach (consisting in the manual definition of a classifier by domain experts) are a very good effectiveness, considerable savings in terms of expert labor power, and straightforward portability to different domains. This survey discusses the main approaches to text categorization that fall within the machine learning paradigm. We will discuss in detail issues pertaining to three different problems, namely, document representation, classifier construction, and classifier evaluation.

Machine learning in automated text categorization

An important part of our information-gathering behavior has always been to find out what other people think. With the growing availability and popularity of opinion-rich resources such as online review sites and personal blogs, new opportunities and challenges arise as people now can, and do, actively use information technologies to seek out and understand the opinions of others. The sudden eruption of activity in the area of opinion mining and sentiment analysis, which deals with the computational treatment of opinion, sentiment, and subjectivity in text, has thus occurred at least in part as a direct response to the surge of interest in new systems that deal directly with opinions as a first-class object.

This survey covers techniques and approaches that promise to directly enable opinion-oriented information-seeking systems. Our focus is on methods that seek to address the new challenges raised by sentiment-aware applications, as compared to those that are already present in more traditional fact-based analysis. We include material on summarization of evaluative text and on broader issues regarding privacy, manipulation, and economic impact that the development of opinion-oriented information-access services gives rise to. To facilitate future work, a discussion of available resources, benchmark datasets, and evaluation campaigns is also provided.

Recent developments in the mobile app industry have resulted in various types of mobile apps, each targeting a different need and a specific audience. Consequently, users access distinct apps to complete their information need tasks. This leads to the use of various apps not only separately, but also collaboratively in the same session to achieve a single goal. Recent work has argued the need for a unified mobile search system that would act as metasearch on users’ mobile devices. The system would identify the target apps for the user’s query, submit the query to the apps, and present the results to the user in a unified way. In this work, we aim to deepen our understanding of user behavior while accessing information on their mobile phones by conducting an extensive analysis of various aspects related to the search process. In particular, we study the effect of task type and user demographics on their behavior in interacting with mobile apps. Our findings reveal trends and patterns that can inform the design of a more effective mobile information access environment.

The Impact of User Demographics and Task Types on Cross-App Mobile Search

This short report describes the participation of the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) at the SMERP Workshop Data Challenge Track for the task text summarization of Level 1. Our participation is based on a linear interpolation for combining relevance and novelty scores of the retrieved tweets. Our method is fully automatic. For the relevance score we used the results from our runs at the text retrieval task whereas for the novelty we used a method based on Word2Vec. In total, we submitted four different runs and we used two different weight parameters. The results showed that when relevance and novelty have an equal contribution in selecting the tweets to use for the summary, the performance is better compared to favoring only the novelty. Additionally, information from POS tags improves the performance of the summarization task.

Queries that contain named entities are very common especially in the blog retrieval. Current approaches for document retrieval are based on the frequency of query terms in documents. These methods may underestimate the query frequency due to the fact that named entities are usually referenced using anaphoric expressions. In this paper we focus on pronouns as anaphoric expressions and propose a method for finding query-entity types including female, male and non − person which helps to identify the proper set of pronouns that can refer to each query. We also propose a proximity-based method for estimating the frequency of the anaphoric expressions which are referring to a query-entity in a document. Experimental results on a standard blog collection show that the proposed method is effective and provides significant improvement over the term-frequency-based baseline.

The continued development of mobile device technologies, their supporting infrastructures and associated services is important to meet the anytime, anywhere information access demands of today’s users. The growing need to deliver information on request, in a form that can be readily and easily digested on the move, continues to be a challenge.
