A number of modern metaheuristic optimization techniques are being exploited to work out a single-objective economic dispatch (ED) problem. The dispatch problems even become more complicated and complex when they consider operational and system constraints, such as network transmission losses, valve-point loading effects originating due to sequential opening of a number of steam admission valves to meet the ever-increasing demand, ramp rate limits, prohibited operating zones, multiple fuel options, spinning reserve, and so on. The heavy constraints make the otherwise convex linear smooth dispatch problem as highly nonconvex nonlinear nonsmooth one. Finding optimal solution for such kind of a constrained nonlinear problem through the deterministic numerical and convex characteristics-based optimization techniques is a difficult task to accomplish. Researchers have frequently employed one of the metaheuristic optimization techniques with powerful computational ability named particle swarm optimization (PSO) to deal with this rather a complicated and toilsome dispatch problem. In Part I of the two-part paper, a comprehensive review or a survey of PSO and its modified versions (involve alterations in the basic structure of PSO) to resolve the constrained ED problem is presented. Part II covers purely the survey of hybrid forms of PSO (hybridization of PSO with other optimization techniques) to tackle the ED problem. The survey is presented in such a way that readers may understand how PSO can be made computationally more efficient.

Modified harmony search algorithm for combined economic emission dispatch of microgrid incorporating renewable sources

Consumption of traditional fossil energy has promoted rapid economic development and caused effects such as climate warming and environmental degradation. In order to solve the problem of environmental economic dispatch (EED), this paper proposes a DE-CQPSO (Differential Evolution-Crossover Quantum Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm based on the fast convergence of differential evolution algorithms and the particle diversity of crossover operators of genetic algorithms. In order to obtain better optimization results, a parameter adaptive control method is used to update the crossover probability. And the problem of multi-objective optimization is solved by introducing a penalty factor. The experimental results show that: the evaluation index and convergence speed of the DE-CQPSO algorithm are better than QPSO (Quantum Particle Swarm Optimization) and other algorithms, whether it is single-objective optimization of fuel cost and emissions or multi-objective optimization considering both optimization objectives. A good compromise value is verified, which verifies the effectiveness and robustness of the DE-CQPSO algorithm in solving environmental economic dispatch problems. The study provides a new research direction for solving environmental economic dispatch problems. At the same time, it provides a reference for the reasonable output of the unit to a certain extent.

Power generation system largely depends on fossil fuels to generate electricity. Due to various reasons, the reserves of fossil fuels are declining and will become too expensive in near future. At the same time, generation of power from fossil fuels causes hazardous gases and particulates to emit, which pollutes the air and causes significant and long term damages on the environment. For this reason, extensive research works have been conducted for last few decades from different perspectives to reduce both the fuel cost as well as the emission of hazardous gases in power generation system. This power generation problem is commonly referred to as the combined economic emission dispatch (CEED) problem. This paper provides a comprehensive review on the uses of different optimization techniques to solve CEED problem. Authors have found advanced nature-inspired methods as the most suitable and successful, and have concluded combinational hybrid methods as the most prospective methods to solve CEED problem.

A quantum-inspired particle swarm optimization approach for environmental/economic power dispatch problem using cubic criterion function

In this research, a quantum computing idea based bat algorithm (QBA) is proposed to solve many-objective combined economic emission dispatch (CEED) problem. Here, CEED is represented using cubic criterion function to reduce the nonlinearities of the system. Along with economic load dispatch, emissions of SO2, NOx, and CO2 are considered as separate three objectives, thus making it a four-objective (many-objective) optimization problem. A unit-wise price penalty factor is considered here to convert all the objectives into a single objective in order to compare the final results with other previously used methods like Lagrangian relaxation (LR), particle swarm optimization, and simulated annealing. QBA is applied in six-unit power generation system for four different loads. The obtained results show QBA successfully solve many-objective CEED problem with greater superiority than other methods found in the literature in terms of quality results, robustness, and computational performance. In the end of this paper, a detailed future research direction is provided based on the simulation results and its analysis. The outcome of this research demonstrates that the inclusion of quantum computing idea in metaheuristic technique provides a useful and reliable tool for solving such many-objective optimization problem.

Quantum-behaved bat algorithm for many-objective combined economic emission dispatch problem using cubic criterion function

Computer-assisted analysis of dental radiograph in dentistry is getting increasing attention from the researchers in recent years. This is mainly because it can successfully reduce human-made error due to stress, fatigue or lack of experience. Furthermore, it reduces diagnosis time and thus, improves overall efficiency and accuracy of dental care system. An automatic teeth recognition model is proposed here using residual network-based faster R-CNN technique. The detection result obtained from faster R-CNN is further refined by using a candidate optimization technique that evaluates both positional relationship and confidence score of the candidates. It achieves 0.974 and 0.981 mAPs for ResNet-50 and ResNet-101, respectively with faster R-CNN technique. The optimization technique further improves the results i.e. F1 score improves from 0.978 to 0.982 for ResNet-101. These results verify the proposed method's ability to recognize teeth with high degree of accuracy. To test the feasibility and robustness of the model, a tenfold cross validation (CV) is presented in this paper. The result of tenfold CV effectively verifies the robustness of the model as the average F1 score obtained is more than 0.970. Thus, the proposed model can be used as a useful and reliable tool to assist dental care professionals in dentistry.
