A system and method are disclosed for providing efficient data storage. A plurality of data segments is received in a data stream. The system determines whether a data segment has been stored previously in a low latency memory. In the event that the data segment is determined to have been stored previously, an identifier for the previously stored data segment is returned.

A graphics processing system includes a graphics processor and a memory for storing data to be used by and generated by the graphics processor. In a first rendering pass, the graphics processor generates an array of graphics data and stores the generated array of graphics data in the memory. The array of graphics data generated in the first rendering pass is used in a subsequent rendering pass. In the first rendering pass, the graphics processor determines one or more regions of the array of graphics data that have a particular characteristic, and generates information indicative of the one or more regions. In the subsequent rendering pass, the graphics processor uses the information indicative of the one or more regions to control the reading of the array of graphics data when it is to be used in the subsequent rendering pass.

A user-activatable dashboard (also referred to as a unified interest layer) contains any number of user interface elements, referred to herein as “widgets,” for quick access by a user. In response to a command from a user, the dashboard is invoked and the widgets are shown on the screen. The user can activate the dashboard at any time, causing the dashboard to temporarily replace the existing user interface display on the user's screen. Once the dashboard has been activated, the user can interact with any or all of the widgets, and can configure the dashboard by adding, deleting, moving, or configuring individual widgets as desired. When the user wishes to return to the normal user interface he or she was working with, the user issues a command causing the dashboard to be dismissed. Once the dashboard has been dismissed, the previous user interface state is restored, allowing the user to resume normal interactions with the operating system.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accomplish an efficient full scene anti-aliasing. SOLUTION: This graphics system can separately select three sampling positions in each super sampling pixel about a 2×2 pixel group (quadruplet). A 12-bit multi-sample application range mask decides which is enabled among twelve samples in the pixel quadruplet. The super sampling pixel is filtered during copyout operation from a local memory to an external buffer memory by using a pixel blend filter for connecting seven samples (three samples from present pixels and two samples from pixels just over and under the present pixels, respectively) from the three vertically displaced pixels. A weighted average is calculated on the basis of the enabled sample in order to decide the last color of the pixels.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a computer for generating video graphics of a video game, etc., with an efficient and inexpensive graphics system capable of performing interaction. SOLUTION: A graphics processor has an embedded frame buffer, and a copy line is provided between the embedded frame buffer 114 and an external frame buffer such as a main memory 112 connected directly to a display device 56. The copy line performs four types of combination conversion of data from a certain format into another format, for instance, one RGB and YUV color format into another RGB and YUV color format. The converted data are transferred to the external frame buffer or a texture buffer for being used as texture.

In a 3D interactive computer graphics system such as a video game display system, polygon vertex data is fed to a 3D graphics processor/display engine via a vertex cache used to cache and organize indexed primitive vertex data streams. The vertex cache may be a small, low-latency cache memory local to the display engine hardware. Polygons can be represented as indexed arrays, e.g., indexed linear lists of data components representing some feature of a vertex (for example, positions, colors, surface normals, or texture coordinates). The vertex cache can fetch the relevant blocks of indexed vertex attribute data on an as-needed basis to make it available to the display processor—providing spatial locality for display processing without requiring the vertex data to be prestored in display order. Efficiency can be increased by customizing and optimizing the vertex cache and associated tags for the purpose of delivering vertices to the graphics engine—allowing more efficient prefetching and assembling of vertices than might be possible using a general-purpose cache and tag structure.
