This hugely informative and wide-ranging analysis on the management of projects, past, present and future, is written both for practitioners and scholars. Beginning with a history of the discipline’s development, Reconstructing Project Management provides an extensive commentary on its practices and theoretical underpinnings, and concludes with proposals to improve its relevancy and value. Written not without a hint of attitude, this is by no means simply another project management textbook.

Objectives

The intent of this paper is in the examination of health IT implementation processes – the barriers to and facilitators of successful implementation, identification of a beginning set of implementation best practices, the identification of gaps in the health IT implementation body of knowledge, and recommendations for future study and application.

Methods

A literature review resulted in the identification of six health IT related implementation best practices which were subsequently debated and clarified by participants attending the NI2012 Research Post Conference held in Montreal in the summer of 2012. Using the framework for implementation research (CFIR) to guide their application, the six best practices were applied to two distinct health IT implementation studies to assess their applicability.

Results

Assessing the implementation processes from two markedly diverse settings illustrated both the challenges and potentials of using standardized implementation processes. In support of what was discovered in the review of the literature, “one size fits all” in health IT implementation is a fallacy, particularly when global diversity is added into the mix. At the same time, several frameworks show promise for use as “scaffolding” to begin to assess best practices, their distinct dimensions, and their applicability for use.

Conclusions

Health IT innovations, regardless of the implementation setting, requires a close assessment of many dimensions. While there is no “one size fits all”, there are commonalities and best practices that can be blended, adapted, and utilized to improve the process of implementation. This paper examines health IT implementation processes and identifies a beginning set of implementation best practices, which could begin to address gaps in the health IT implementation body of knowledge.

Complexity and the science of implementation in health IT — knowledge gaps and future visions

We describe the initial process of eliciting requirements for an Internet-of-things (IoT) application involving a hospital emergency room. First, we discuss the process of modeling IoT systems through rich pictures and use cases. Then, we demonstrate how these can be used to model emergency room systems. Then, we create use case models for a particular situation—a patient potentially suffering from a myocardial infarction. Finally, we discuss generalization of the specific case to a broader hospital wide system. We believe that such an approach can lead to increased efficiency, increased safety, and better tracking of people, equipment, and supplies.

Stakeholder Identification and Use Case Representation for Internet-of-Things Applications in Healthcare

Process modeling is of paramount importance in organization. It is a powerful tool to manage and control all its activities. However, the diversity of approaches and standards proposing process modeling makes choosing a methodology for modeling processes a delicate work. This choice has become more difficult, given the increasing complexity of current information systems and requires the consideration of several aspects and dimensions. This paper proposes to explore a new way for modeling business processes within a complex environment, and defines an extension of the seven views approach by adding a system dimension. This extension, based on the System of Systems paradigm, provides to designers and project managers a multi-level view (system / subsystems) by expliciting the relationship between processes and complex system.

Business and Information Technology (IT) alignment methods and models have been developed for the last few years. Mainly, they focus on strategic alignment, however, the misunderstanding and lack of alignment are hidden in requirement mapping methods, tools, and approaches. Therefore, the paper aim is to present a model of business to system requirements mapping, based on the application of SysML and ArchiMate diagrams. The proposed approach is assumed to be considered as agile, because of its features. Finally, the approach is supported by online store case study. Beyond that, systematic literature review was done on SysML requirements engineering.

Health care domain faces an era of unprecedented pressure in order to improve the quality and effectiveness of care. Subsequently, Hospital Information Systems (HIS) have become mandatory in order to improve the quality of both health care and managerial processes, while simultaneously reducing their cost. However, due to complex nature of HIS, variety of end users and professional disciplines related to the production process of care, stakeholders require an in-depth analysis of requirements. This paper proposes a novel approach for modeling HIS requirements based on the System of Systems (SoS) paradigm. The language used is SysML due to its vocation to be a modeling language dedicated to complex systems. The billing system serves as an experiment for modeling and requirements association.

Systems of Systems Paradigm in a Hospital Environment: Benefits for Requirements Elicitation Process

Today, health facilities can be restructured only as part of a triple challenge: meeting the healthcare needs in a given area, meeting the requirements of safety and quality, and adapting to the constraints of scarcity of both human and financial resources. In this context, hospitals have undertaken full or partial reforms, which consist primarily in the introduction of Hospital Information Systems (HIS). However, digitalization projects of these structures encounter a wide range of issues due to the complexity and difficulty of such projects. This paper proposes a response to these difficulties according to a HIS project multidimensional metamodel. This one apprehends the dynamic nature of a HIS implementation considering its interactivity with other factors, phases and iterative nature.

Multidimensional Project Metamodel Construction Methodology for a HIS Deployment

Hospital Information Systems (HIS) have become the one way to improve the quality of healthcare and the working conditions of health professionals while simultaneously searching an economic efficiency. However, the HIS implementation is a difficult and complex operation due to the wide variety of end users and professional disciplines involved in the healthcare production process. This paper proposes a methodological framework based on the Model Driven Engineering approach to overcome the problematic of a HIS deployment. It aims to provide a formal solution to this issue through a multidimensional supervision metamodel. By considering the complex system and the System of Systems paradigms, this work explores a new way to overcome the HIS complexity and expand the engineering project concepts according to the HIS context.

Building a HIS supervision metamodel

Complex systems deployment projects usually face some major difficulties leading sometimes to spectacular failures. Efforts to overcome this complexity are focused mostly in adapting the concepts of project management engineering in order to be adapted as much as possible to the constraints imposed by those systems. This paper proposes a new approach to the problematic of a complex system deployment through a supervision metamodel. By considering the complex system and the System of Systems paradigms, this work explores a new way to overcome the known complexity of the projects carried out in similar environment and expanding the engineering project concept according to this context.
