This paper presents a new modulation and control strategies for the high-frequency link matrix converter (HFLMC). The proposed method aims to achieve controllable power factor in the grid interface as well as voltage and current regulation for a battery energy storage device. The matrix converter (MC) is a key element of the system, since it performs a direct ac to ac conversion between the grid and the power transformer, dispensing the traditional dc-link capacitors. Therefore, the circuit volume and weight are reduced and a longer service life is expected when compared with the existing technical solutions. A prototype was built to validate the mathematical analysis and the simulation results. Experimental tests developed in this paper show the capability of controling the grid currents in the synchronous reference frame in order to provide grid services. Simultaneously, the battery current is well regulated with small ripple, which makes this converter ideal for battery charging of electric vehicles and energy storage applications.

Modulation Strategy for a Single-Stage Bidirectional and Isolated AC–DC Matrix Converter for Energy Storage Systems

In this paper, a single-phase single-stage isolated zero current switched (ZCS) current-fed full-bridge ac/dc converter is proposed for IGBT-based high-power power factor correction (PFC) applications. By adding an additional commutation path and few resonant components, ZCS operation is realized for all IGBTs. The conduction loss is also lowered by the additional path. Furthermore, the control strategy for the proposed converter is compatible with that developed for traditional PFC converter. In this paper, the topology derivation and circuit operational analysis are given. The control strategy is introduced. A 3-kw prototype is developed and tested to verify the circuit functionality. Finally, the efficiency performance is investigated and comparison is made to show the advantages of the topology.

Single-Phase Single-Stage Isolated ZCS Current-Fed Full-Bridge Converter for High-Power AC/DC Applications

A novel carrier-based unipolar-sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM)-oriented modulation technique with synchronous rectification for isolated bidirectional single-stage high-frequency-ac link dc–ac converters using SiC MOSFET is presented in this paper. The dc–ac converter is composed of a full-bridge (FB) inverter cascaded with a cycloconverter through a high-frequency transformer. A carrier-based unipolar-SPWM-oriented modulation technique with synchronous rectification is proposed to realize zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) for the FB inverter and zero-current or zero-voltage-switching (ZVS/ZCS) for the cycloconverter in all load ranges, and to suppress the voltage spikes introduced by the transformer leakage inductance as well. In order to increase the switching frequency, efficiency, and power density, this paper proposes to utilize SiC MOSFETs for the converter. Synchronous rectification is implemented to further increase the converter efficiency. With the novel modulation technique, there are two switches in the cycloconverter that are continuously on at each interval, which eliminates on-fourth of the switching loss. A simulation model and a 400 VDC–240 VAC, 1.2=kW prototype have been developed to validate the effectiveness and performance of the proposed unipolar soft-switching modulation technique and SiC converter.

An Isolated Bidirectional Single-Stage DC–AC Converter Using Wide-Band-Gap Devices With a Novel Carrier-Based Unipolar Modulation Technique Under Synchronous Rectification

AC–DC power supply is essential equipment which builds the connection between the ac grid and the dc loads. In order to achieve high-power density and high efficiency, a family of enhanced zero-current-switched (ZCS) single-stage single-phase isolated ac–dc converters is proposed for high-power high-voltage dc application. Only one resonant capacitor is required for the proposed converters to realize ZCS operation. On the other hand, the over voltage problem which exists in former developed ZCS ac–dc topologies is eliminated. Thus, lower voltage rating IGBTs can be applied. Higher efficiency is realized. At the same time, these converters inherit the feature such as one-stage power conversion, low conduction loss, good total harmonics distortion performance, etc. A 3 kW prototype is built to verify the proposed converters. A comparison is made to show the efficiency improvement clearly.

Family of Enhanced ZCS Single-Stage Single-Phase Isolated AC–DC Converter for High-Power High-Voltage DC Supply

This paper evaluates the benefits of using a high-level synthesis (HLS) tool to develop field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based real-time simulators for power electronics systems. The investigated workflow generates a synthesizable hardware description from a system level C-code along with a set of directives that specify performance criteria such as area utilization and timing closure requirements. The performance of the HLS approach is evaluated for different circuit sizes and target clock frequencies. Results show that HLS can be used for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) applications when the circuit to be simulated is small and the target clock frequency is not too high (up to 100 MHz). For larger circuits and higher clock frequencies, HLS will either require a simulation time-step that is too large for real-time simulation purposes, or will tend to use almost all of the FPGA resources.

An Evaluation of a High-Level Synthesis Approach to the FPGA-Based Submicrosecond Real-Time Simulation of Power Converters

This paper proposes a high-performance “cycloconverter-type” high-frequency-link (HFL) single-phase rectifier with an active voltage clamper, which provides bidirectional two-stage galvanic isolation ac-dc power conversion Modulation strategy, modeling method, and control scheme are comprehensively developed for the HFL rectifier to guarantee its superior performances: 1) two-stage power conversion and soft-switching switch devices lead to high conversion efficiency; 2) complete elimination of voltage spikes during commutation ensures safe operation of high-frequency switching devices; and 3) it can equally function as a high-performance conventional Pulsewidth Modulation (PWM) rectifier: sinusoidal input current, constant dc output voltage, bidirectional power flows between dc side and ac side, and adjustable power factor A prototype of the proposed HFL rectifier is built for evaluation The experiment results demonstrate the efficacy of the soft-switching HFL rectifier and its highly promising control performance The proposed rectifier offers a high-efficiency, high-power-density, and high-performance galvanic isolation power conversion solution to extensive applications

A High-Frequency-Link Single-Phase PWM Rectifier

With the rapid development of new energy vehicles, the reliability and safety of Brushless DC motor drive system, the core component of new energy vehicles, has been widely concerned. The traditional open circuit fault detection method of power electronic converters have the problem of poor feature extraction ability because of inadequate signal processing means, which lead to low recognition accuracy. Therefore, a fault recognition method based on continuous wavelet transform and convolutional neural network (CWT-CNN) is proposed. It can not only adaptively extract features, but also avoid the complexity and uncertainty of artificial feature extraction. The three-phase current signal is converted into time-frequency spectrum by continuous wavelet transform as the input data of AlexNet. At the same time, the changes of time domain and frequency domain under different fault modes are analyzed. Finally, the softmax classifier with Adam optimizer is used to classify the fault features extracted by CNN to realize the state recognition of different fault modes of power electronic converter. The experimental results show that the CWT-CNN model achieves satisfactory fault detection accuracy under different working conditions and different fault modes. The effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method are verified by comparing with other networks.

In this paper, a full-bridge full-wave high frequency link inverter with active clamper is proposed. Analysis and modeling of such an inverter are provided. A PR controller is developed and implemented for the inverter. The effectiveness of the proposed inverter and its control strategy are verified by using experiments.
