While it is generally accepted that Subcutaneous Injection Immunotherapy (SCIT) and Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT) are both efficacious, there is not yet a significant amount of information regarding their comparative efficacy. In this paper, we performed a retrospective chart review and compared treatment results in two groups of patients (both with nasal allergies with or without asthma) that were treated either with SCIT or SLIT. Both treatment modalities were found to be of similar efficacy.

Efficacy of Sublingual Immunotherapy versus Subcutaneous Injection Immunotherapy in Allergic Patients

In this study we aimed to evaluate the peak cough flow (PCF) in healthy Brazilian subjects. We evaluated 484 healthy subjects between 18 and 40 years old. Subjects were seated and oriented were asked to perform a maximal inspiration followed by a quick, short and explosive expiration on the peak flow meter. Three measures were carried out and recorded the average of the three results for each individual. The PCF values ranged between 240 and 500 L/min. The PCF values were lower in females than in males. The PCF was inversely proportional to age. The values for Brazilian adult healthy subjects regarding PCF were between 240 and 500 L/min.

Chest and neck mobilization effects on spirometric responses in healthy subjects.

PEFR is a simple and reliable way of following patients with bronchial asthma and other obstructive airway diseases. Normal data is available for Caucasian and North Indian children but not for ethnic South Indian children. We, therefore, measured Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) in 343 healthy South Indian children aged 4-15 years, using the Wright mini peak flow meter. A nomogram was constructed relating PEFR to height. Prediction equations for PEFR using height alone or height, age and weight were determined for both sexes. The prediction equation for boys based on height alone was PEFR = 4.08 height (cm) - 284.55 and for girls was PEFR = 3.92 height (cm) - 277.01.

Evaluation of Peak Expiratory Flow Variability in an Adolescent Population Sample: To the Editor

Purpose: Peak expiratory flow (PEF) was measured in healthy children aged five to ten years in order to provide baseline values and to determine correlations between PEF and factors such as gender, age and type of school.

Methods: After the Ethical Committee of Research in Human of the School of Medicine of ABC – FMABC approval, PEF and height were measured in 1942 children between five and ten years old from nine public schools and nine private schools throughout Sao Bernardo do Campo City. PEF was measured using the Mini-Wright Peak Flow Meter (Clement Clarke International Ltd.) and. height was measured using a Sanny professional stadiometer . 

Results: Significant differences were found in values for PEF: higher values were seen in older students in comparison with younger students, in males in comparison with females and in students from private schools in comparison with public schools, with average values ranging from 206 L/min to 248 L/min,. Linear correlations were seen for PEF values with both height and age (Spearman Coefficient). 

Conclusions: Differences were seen for PEF between genders and between types of school, and a linear correlation was seen for PEF with both age and height in healthy children from five to ten years old.

Peak expiratory flow values are higher in older and taller healthy male children: An observational study

Background: Obesity and its comorbidities such as insulin resistance, endothelial dysfunction, hypertension, type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis have been associated with chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. Weight loss with maintenance is not always possible. Bariatric surgery has been proved to be the only efficient method for weight reduction in patients with clinically severe obesity. It leads to significant weight loss and improvement and/or remission of comorbidities. On the other hand, considering that surgical intervention per se induces oxidative stress and inflammatory response, the objective of the present study was to verify if some inflammatory marker, TBARS and/or Vitamin E could be evaluated before gastric surgery. Methods: a quantitative cross-sectional study was carried out at Clinica Ana Rosa (Santo Andre, SP, Brazil). 100 obese patients (BMI ≥ 35-40 kg/m2) awaiting bariatric surgery were selected for this study. The control group included 29 individuals, BMI < 35 kg/m2, with or without associated comorbidities. The patients completed a structured interview. Weight, height, waist and hip circumferences were also collected. Blood was collected. Glucose (G), total cholesterol (TC), HDL cholesterol (HDLc), LDL cholesterol (LDLc), VLDL cholesterol (VLDLc), triglycerides (TG), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), vitamin E (VIT E), fibrinogen (FIB), IL-6 (human interleukin-6), TNF-alpha and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were measured. Results: patients have shown increased serum levels of hs-CRP and FIB. In this study, class II and III obese patients awaiting bariatric surgery and the control group had lower than normal VIT E levels and no significant changes in TBARS levels were observed. Conclusions: excess weight and accumulated fat in subjects with severe obesity seem to be related to increased inflammatory response, therefore, our results reinforce the importance of evaluating inflammatory markers and VIT E in obese patients before bariatric surgery.
