Designing and implementing a remote laboratory has long been a professional job, carried out by experts working in synergy with teachers. Nowadays, thanks to the availability of advanced tools, the implementation can be assigned as a student project related to advanced measurement and automation classes. The development of the project happens to have an important educational validity, since it allows the student to get familiar with principles and technologies that characterize intelligent manufacturing and smart environments, as central elements of Industry 4.0. In particular, the student has the opportunity to increase knowledge of Internet technologies that more and more often are substituting for the proprietary solutions, previously adopted in the industry for process monitoring and automation.

Remote laboratory design and implementation as a measurement and automation experiential learning opportunity

This paper is an overview of approaches to teaching physics courses delivered to students of engineering disciplines. It addresses, first, the history of teaching physics to engineering students starting in the early 20th century, then reviews the main issues presented and discussed over the last decade in a series of conferences on Physics Teaching in Engineering Education (PTEE). Finally, this paper discusses more contemporary views on the subject, including the latest technologies and new methodologies. It is not a critical review of teaching physics to engineering students, but rather a summary of various views and approaches over the span of the entire century. The common denominator of the study is the relevance to the competency-based approach: how the papers focus on teaching engineers the principles of physics in a manner that contributes to success in their professional careers.

An Overview of Teaching Physics for Undergraduates in Engineering Environments

Neste artigo e apresentada uma revisao da literatura publicada em revistas de America Latina com respeito ao uso e desenvolvimento de laboratorios virtuais e laboratorios remotos no ensino da fisica. Os artigos selecionados de revistas focalizadas ao ensino da fisica, ciencia e tecnologia, alem dos bancos de dados de Google Scholar e IEEE Xplore. Eles eram um total de 79 artigos. Deles, foram analisados a fundo os artigos que descrevem desenvolvimentos elaborados na regiao. Foi achado que os recursos abracam topicos de fisica diversos que sao predominantemente usados no nivel universitario e que eles sao a maior parte usada para apoiar o ensino presente. Embora estas ferramentas estejam em consonancia com a educacao a distancia, seu uso nesta modalidade so foi registrada em uma instituicao.

Una revisión sobre desarrollo y uso de Laboratorios Virtuales y Laboratorios Remotos en la Enseñanza de la Física en Latinoamérica

There is no doubt that experimental work is fundamental in the teaching of physics, however neither the accurate spaces nor the equipment for its fulfillment are always available. Taking into account the range of Remote Labs (RL) as resources for teaching and learning, the Open State University (UNED) from Costa Rica has started the Remote Testing Lab to develop and encourage the use of RLs in the institution as well as boosting its use in other university and high school institutions within the country. The present work shows the first steps of this project in terms of courses at UNED in which RL was used, its use in physics teacher training workshops and its use in high school.

Remote experimentation in the teaching of physics in Costa Rica: First steps

A laboratory conceived as a service provider that allows remote clients using sets of instruments, regarded as ‘things of the internet’, is proposed. To assure efficiency and responsiveness, the laboratory controller is programmed as a multithreading system, which can take advantage of multicore processors, now available at accessible costs. The laboratory server relies on TCP /IP communication with clients, and uses GPIB bus to control local instruments. It allows several clients to connect and interact with the specific resources of the laboratory. Thanks to the availability of identical sets of resources, and to the underneath multithreading philosophy, clients requests are processed in parallel rather than according to a classical queuing approach.

IOT Enabling Measurement Applications in Industry 4.0: Platform for Remote Programming ATES

The learning of Physics involves building up and using lab experiments. In turn, teachers must be trained in experimenting and using several resources that enable them to design valuable teaching strategies and learning activities. Thanks to Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), virtual and remote labs can provide a framework where physical experiments can be developed. Altough remote labs have been in use for over a decade now in several countries and levels of education, its use at secondary schools in Latin America has not been reported yet. The Virtual Instruments System in Reality (VISIR) is one of these remote labs, suitable to practice in the area of electrical circuits. This paper aims at describing how this remote lab was used in a training workshop for secondary school level teachers of Physics in Costa Rica.

Laboratorios remotos: Herramientas para fomentar el aprendizaje experimental de la Física en educación a distancia

The Universidad Estatal a Distancia (UNED) in Costa Rica is the public distance-education university in Costa Rica. It has been regularly using different types of remote laboratories since 2017, and is in the process of deploying new remote laboratories, as well as providing high quality simulations for improving the experimentation process in distance education; in the particular fields of Physics and Engineering. LabsLand is the global network of educational real laboratories available online. In 2018, UNED and LabsLand deployed the VISIR electronics remote laboratory in UNED. Since then, at the time of this writing, 167 students have had 979 laboratory sessions, including both in class and in multiple workshops with school teachers and international events with other researchers and professors.
