Reconstructions of the relative positions of the India and Eurasia plates, using recently revised histories of movement between India and Somalia and between North America and Eurasia and of the opening of the East African Rift, show that India's convergence rate with Eurasia slowed by more than 40% between 20 and 10 Ma. Much evidence suggests that beginning in that interval, the Tibetan Plateau grew outward rapidly and that radially oriented compressive strain in the area surrounding Tibet increased. An abrupt increase in the mean elevation of the plateau provides a simple explanation for all of these changes. Elementary calculations show that removal of mantle lithosphere from beneath Tibet, or from just part of it, would lead to both a modest increase in the mean elevation of the plateau of ~1 km and a substantial change in the balance of forces per unit length applied to the India and Eurasia plates.

Slowing of India's convergence with Eurasia since 20 Ma and its implications for Tibetan mantle dynamics

We present a new analysis of the lithospheric architecture of Africa, and its evolution from ca. 3.6 Ga to the present. Upper-lithosphere domains , generated or reworked in different time periods, have been delineated by integrating regional tectonics and geochronology with geophysical data (magnetic, gravity, and seismic). The origins and evolution of lower-lithosphere domains are interpreted from a high-resolution global shear-wave tomographic model, using thermal/compositional modeling and xenolith/xenocryst data from volcanic rocks. These data are integrated to map the distribution of ancient highly depleted subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM), zones of younger or strongly modified SCLM and zones of active mantle upwelling, and to relate these to the evolution of the upper lithosphere domains. The lithospheric architecture of Africa consists of several Archean cratons and smaller cratonic fragments, stitched together and flanked by younger fold belts; the continental assembly as we see it has only existed since lower Paleozoic time. The larger cratons are underlain by geochemically depleted, rigid, and mechanically robust SCLM; these cratonic roots have steep sides, extending in some cases to ≥300-km depth. Beneath smaller cratons (e.g., Kaapvaal) extensive refertilization has reduced the lateral and vertical extent of strongly depleted SCLM. Some cratonic roots extend ≥300 km into the Atlantic Ocean, suggesting that the upper lithosphere may detach during continental breakup, leaving fragments of SCLM scattered in the ocean basin. The cratonic margins, and some intracratonic domain boundaries, have played a major role in the tectonics of Africa. They have repeatedly focused ascending magmas, leading to refertilization and weakening of the SCLM. These boundaries have localized successive cycles of extension, rifting, and renewed accretion; the ongoing development of the East Africa Rift and its branches is only the latest stage in this process. The less depleted SCLM that underlies some accretionary belts may have been generated in Archean time, and repeatedly refertilized by the passage of magmas during younger tectonic events. Our analysis indicates that originally Archean SCLM is far more extensive beneath Africa than previously recognized, and implies that post-Archean SCLM rarely survives the collision/accretion process. Where continental crust and SCLM have remained connected, there is a strong linkage between the tectonic evolution of the crust and the composition and modification of its underlying SCLM.

Geochemistry of the 755 Ma Mundine Well dyke swarm, northwestern Australia: Part of a Neoproterozoic mantle superplume beneath Rodinia?

Most mass extinctions during the last 500 m.y. coincide with eruptions of large igneous provinces (LIPs). The Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction was synchronous with the Deccan flood volcanism, the Permian-Triassic extinction with the eruption of the enormous Siberian traps, and the end-Guadalupian extinction with the Emeishan volcanic province. The causal link remains disputed, however, and many LIPs apparently had no significant impact on the biosphere. Here we show that a key control on the destructive consequences of LIP emplacement is the type of sedimentary rock in basins beneath the flood basalts. Contact metamorphism around intrusions in dolomite, evaporite, coal, or organic-rich shale generates large quantities of greenhouse and toxic gases (CO 2 , CH 4 , SO 2 ), which subsequently vent to the atmosphere and cause global warming and mass extinctions. The release of sediment-derived gases had a far greater impact on the environment than the emission of magmatic gases.

Climate changes caused by degassing of sediments during the emplacement of large igneous provinces

The Ethiopian plateau is made up of several distinct volcanic centres of different ages and magmatic affinities. In the NE, a thick sequence of 30 Ma flood basalts is overlain by the 30 Ma Simien shield volcano. The flood basalts and most of this shield volcano, except for a thin veneer of alkali basalt, are tholeiitic. In the centre of the province, a far thinner sequence of flood basalt is overlain by the 22 Ma Choke and Guguflu shield volcanoes. Like the underlying flood basalts, these shields are composed of alkaline lavas. A third type of magma, which also erupted at 30 Ma, is more magnesian, alkaline and strongly enriched in incompatible trace elements. Eruption of this magma was confined to the NE of the province, a region where the lava flows are steeply tilted as a result of deformation contemporaneous with their emplacement. Younger shields (e.g. Mt Guna, 10·7 Ma) are composed of Si-undersaturated lavas. The three main types of magma have very different major and trace element characteristics ranging from compositions low in incompatible elements in the tholeiites [e.g. 10 ppm La at 7 wt % MgO (=La7), La/Υb = 4.2], moderate in the alkali basalts (La7 = 24, La/Υb = 9.2), and very high in the magnesian alkaline magmas (La7 = 43, La/Υb = 17). Although their Nd and Sr isotope compositions are similar, Pb isotopic compositions vary considerably; 206Pb/204Pb varies in the range of ∼17·9-18·6 in the tholeiites and ∼19·0-19·6 in the 22 Ma shields. A conventional model of melting in a mantle plume, or series of plumes, cannot explain the synchronous eruption of incompatible-element-poor tholeiites and incompatible-element-rich alkali lavas, the large range of Pb isotope compositions and the broad transition from tholeiitic to alkali magmatism during a period of continental rifting. The lithospheric mantle played only a passive role in the volcanism and does not represent a major source of magma. The mantle source of the Ethiopian volcanism can be compared with the broad region of mantle upwelling in the South Pacific that gave rise to the volcanic islands of French Polynesia. Melting in large hotter-than-average parts of the Ethiopian superswell produced the flood basalts; melting in small compositionally distinct regions produced the magmas that fed the shield volcanoes. © Oxford University Press 2004; all rights reserved.

Thin-section observations and electron probe analyses, and trace element data are reported from a new mantle xenolith hosted in Miocene alkali basalt from the western flank of Simien shield volcano, Ethiopia. The spinel lherzolite enclaves contain variable proportions of olivine, orthopyroxene, green clinopyroxene and brown spinel, and have undergone deformation and partial recrystallization. They represent unmetasomatized, fertile xenoliths which were subjected to a late-stage melt–rock reaction. Trace element contents of clinopyroxene crystals are extremely low and quite different from those of the other xenoliths within the East African Rift System.
