The analysis of medical images has been woven into the fabric of the pattern analysis and machine intelligence (PAMI) community since the earliest days of these Transactions. Initially, the efforts in this area were seen as applying pattern analysis and computer vision techniques to another interesting dataset. However, over the last two to three decades, the unique nature of the problems presented within this area of study have led to the development of a new discipline in its own right. Examples of these include: the types of image information that are acquired, the fully three-dimensional image data, the nonrigid nature of object motion and deformation, and the statistical variation of both the underlying normal and abnormal ground truth. In this paper, we look at progress in the field over the last 20 years and suggest some of the challenges that remain for the years to come.

Magnetic resonance elastography: Non-invasive mapping of tissue elasticity

A test program was carried out to evaluate several new high-temperature friction materials for use in aircraft disk brakes. A specially built test apparatus utilizing a disk brake and wheel half from a small jet aircraft was used. The apparatus enabled control of brake pressure, velocity and braking time. Tests were run under both constant and variables velocity conditions and covered a kinetic energy range similar to that encountered in aircraft brake service. The materials evaluation showed that two newly developed friction materials show potential for use in aircraft disk brakes. One of the materials is a nickel-based sintered composite, while the other is a molybdenum-based material. Both materials show much lower wear rates than conventional copper-based materials and are better able to withstand the high temperatures encountered during braking. Evaluation of Aircraft Brake Materials

Recently, a variety of methods for generating elastic contrast images of biological tissue have been put forward [1,2,3]. To date the large majority of these methods have been developed under assumptions of two dimensional mechanical behavior for the tissue in question. While this may well be valid in certain idealized conditions, it is by no means accurate for the general case, especially for non-symmetric tissue geometries or property distributions. The Third Body Concept is a very useful tool for simplifying and unifying the identification of tribo-logical system. In its initial formulation by Godet, it was implied that the system could be defined like a hydro-dynamic system, with the number and behavior of the constituents being initially specified. Then the interfacial interactions are identified to allow velocity accommodation within the system. In a variety of sliding systems, though, the friction behavior of the system changes in time in a way that is hard to predict with normal third body models. This paper will discuss several cases in which either the interfacial conditions or the behavior of the first or third bodies varies during sliding. Those changes in behavior could be included in an expanded third body concept which includes various velocity accomodation mechanisms within the model.
