Journal ArticleDOI
Machine Perfusion or Cold Storage in Deceased-Donor Kidney Transplantation
Cyril Moers,Jacqueline M. Smits,Mark-Hugo J. Maathuis,Juergen Treckmann,Frank Van Gelder,Bogdan P. Napieralski,Margitta van Kasterop-Kutz,Jaap J. Homan van der Heide,Jean-Paul Squifflet,Ernest van Heurn,Guenter R. Kirste,Axel Rahmel,Henri G. D. Leuvenink,Andreas Paul,Jacques Pirenne,Rutger J. Ploeg +15 more
TL;DR: Hypothermic machine perfusion was associated with a reduced risk of delayed graft function and improved graft survival in the first year after transplantation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Type of donor aortic preservation solution and not cold ischemia time is a major determinant of biliary strictures after liver transplantation.
Jacques Pirenne,Frank Van Gelder,Willy Coosemans,Raymond Aerts,Bridget Gunson,T Koshiba,Inge Fourneau,Darius F. Mirza,Werner Van Steenbergen,Johan Fevery,Frederik Nevens,Paul McMaster +11 more
TL;DR: It is hypothesized that high‐viscosity (HV) preservation solutions in the donor do not completely flush the small donor peribiliary plexus, leading to inadequate preservation of the bile ducts and posttransplant BSs, and mixed preservation solution might protect against BS formation while providing optimal liver graft preservation, function, and survival despite a mean CIT longer than 10 hours.
Journal ArticleDOI
Steroid-free immunosuppression during and after liver transplantation--a 3-yr follow-up report.
Jacques Pirenne,Raymond Aerts,Takaaki Koshiba,Frank Van Gelder,Tania Roskams,Marie Schetz,Marleen Verhaegen,Peter Lauwers,Johan Fevery,Frederik Nevens +9 more
TL;DR: The long‐term follow-up data are reported of a prospective pilot study designed to determine whether liver transplantation could be performed with no steroids at all (neither during nor after surgery).
Journal ArticleDOI
Tolerance of Liver Transplant Patients to Strenuous Physical Activity in High-Altitude
Jacques Pirenne,Frank Van Gelder,Tatiana Kharkevitch,Frederik Nevens,Chris Verslype,Willy Peetermans,H Kitade,Luc Vanhees,Yves Y. Devos,Markus M. Hauser,Etienne Hamoir,B. Pirotte +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, six liver transplant patients were selected to participate in a trek up Mount Kilimanjaro 5895m, Tanzania, and compared with fifteen control subjects with similar profiles and matched for age and body mass index.
Journal ArticleDOI
Combined ‘En Bloc’ Liver and Pancreas Transplantation in Patients with Liver Disease and Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
Jacques Pirenne,Koen Deloose,Willy Coosemans,Raymond Aerts,Frank Van Gelder,Dirk Kuypers,Bart Maes,Chris Verslype,P Yap,Werner Van Steenbergen,Tania Roskams,Chantal Mathieu,Johan Fevery,Frederik Nevens +13 more
TL;DR: Surgical, medical and immunological aspects of combined liver‐pancreas transplantation are discussed in the light of the existing relevant literature and two patients suffering from both liver disease and Type 1 diabetes are reported.
