The Social Context of Premarital Sexual Permissiveness

This paper reports on the organization, delivery, and part of the evaluation of a three-year community project in sex education for parents. The proJect was based on the philosophy that parents are the main sex educators of their children, whether they do it well or badly. The aim of the project was to defuse common myths that hinder communication about sexuality in order to help parents become more effective sex educators of their own children. Over 1,000 parents participated in programs offered by 70 community leaders trained through the proJect. Over 80% of the leaders intend to offer additional programs in order to meet the requests of parents. Recommendations for curriculum and structure of such programs are discussed.

A Study of the Sexual Values of Catholic College Students

As a fundamental aspect of the human experience, sexuality is experienced at every stage in the lifespan. Sexual values, behaviors, and health are important components of individual and family well-being. Educating about such a fundamental aspect of life is both obvious and crucial. In this article, we consider the potential of sexuality education in the field and profession of family life education (FLE). We critique sexuality education in the United States, and we critique the marginal place of human sexuality in the FLE field. We then offer recommendations for incorporating lifespan, socio-ecological, family systems and intersectionality into sexuality education, and recommendations for FLE and sexuality education research and practice. We argue that educating about sexuality in the context of FLE-and activating the profession of FLE for sexuality education-will strategically advance sexuality education, sexual health, and the field of FLE.

Wideman Divorce is a major social problem, on the increase, and usually generating personal crises for those involved. Yet crises are occa¬ sions for personal growth if a person can resolve them constructively. This study was designed to answer three main questions regarding the resolution of the divorce crisis. Firstly, what is the relationship between guilt and the resolution of the divorce crisis? The literature suggests, according to the prevailing societal attitudes, that divorce is a wrongful act in failing to maintain the marriage. Hence, people who have a predisposition to over-reacting to societal attitudes and find themselves incapacitated by a chronic state of guilt, may have dif¬ ficulty resolving the divorce crisis. Secondly, what is the relationship between single attribution of responsibility (to self, to ex-spouse, or to external factors) and the resolution of the divorce crisis? Professional persons enrolled in a sex education institute were studied regarding their attitudes toward sex education for adolescents. The direction and degree of attitude changes emanating from participation in the institute as well as demographic determinants of these changes were investigated. Workshop attitude change was measured in a pre-post design using the Sex Education Liberalism Scale (SELS) and the Sex Education Content Scale (SECS). Each respondent was his own control. Increased liberalism toward sex education was found. Marital status religion occupation and education were found to be discriminating variables whereas age and sex were not. (authors)
