The Politics of the Earth: Environmental Discourses

A social-psychological model is developed to examine the proposition that environmentalism represents a new way of thinking. It presumes that action in support of environmental quality may derive from any of three value orientations: egoistic, social-altruistic, or biospheric, and that gender may be implicated in the relation between these orientations and behavior. Behavioral intentions are modeled as the sum across values of the strength of a value times the strength of beliefs about the consequences of environmental conditions for valued objects. Evidence from a survey of 349 college students shows that beliefs about consequences for each type of valued object independently predict willingness to take political action, but only beliefs about consequences for self reliably predict willingness to pay through taxes. The Social Bases of Environmental Concern: A Review of Hypotheses, Explanations and Empirical Evidence

Livelihoods perspectives have been central to rural development thinking and practice in the past decade But where do such perspectives come from, what are their conceptual roots, and what influences have shaped the way they have emerged? This paper offers an historical review of key moments in debates about rural livelihoods, identifying the tensions, ambiguities and challenges of such approaches A number of core challenges are identified, centred on the need to inject a more thorough-going political analysis into the centre of livelihoods perspectives This will enhance the capacity of livelihoods perspectives to address key lacunae in recent discussions, including questions of knowledge, politics, scale and dynamics

Ecological modernization as social theory

Recent research in environmental sociology is reviewed. Following a brief overview of the development of environmental sociology over the past dec­ ade, five areas of environmental sociological scholarship are discussed: (a) the "new human ecology," (b) environmental attitudes, values, and be­ haviors, (c) the environmental movement, (d) technological risk and risk assessment, and (e) the political economy of the environment and environ­ mental politics. It is argued that while the early environmental sociologists sought nothing less than the reorientation of sociology and social theory, environmental sociology's influence on the discipline has been modest. In­ stead, environmental sociology has steadily taken on characteristics of the discipline as a whole, especially its fragmentation and its dualism between theory and the pursuit of middle-range empirical puzzles. Encouraging ex­ amples of recent work that creatively integrates theory and empirical research in environmental sociology are discussed.
