Precision positioning of an object relative to a reference point is a common task in many activities of production engineering. Sensor technologies for single axis measurement, either linear or rotary, which form the fundamentals of measurement technologies for precision positioning, are reviewed. Multi-axis coordinate measurement methods such as triangulation and multilateration, as well as Cartesian and polar systems for specifying the position in a plane or three-dimensional (3D) space are then presented, followed by a discussion on traceability and standards. Some advanced applications of measurement technologies for precision positioning in manufacturing industries are also demonstrated.

Measurement technologies for precision positioning

Initial assessments of a wind lidar have shown the technology to have significant potential for wind field measurements in the wind energy industry. A more extended evaluation is now reported using a scanning lidar next to a meteorological mast with calibrated anemometers at the Riso wind test site in Hovsore on the windy northwest coast of Denmark. Results are presented of wind speed comparisons at heights up to 100 m above ground level showing excellent correlation between the lidar and the cup anemometers. Wind lidar evaluation at the Danish wind test site in Høvsøre

Sources of coherent, monochromatic short-wavelength infrared (1-2 μm) light are essential in telecommunications, biomedical diagnosis, and optical sensing. Today’s semiconductor lasers are made by epitaxial growth on a lattice-matched single-crystal substrate. This strategy is incompatible with direct growth on silicon. Colloidal quantum dots synthesized in solution can, in contrast, be coated onto any surface. Here we show a 1.53 μm laser fabricated using a remarkably simple process: dipping a glass capillary into a colloidal suspension of semiconductor quantum dots. We developed the procedures to produce a smooth, low-scattering-loss film inside the capillary, resulting in a whispering gallery mode laser with a well-defined threshold. While there exist three prior reports of optical gain in infrared-emitting colloidal quantum dots [1, 2, 3], this work represents the first report of an infrared laser made using solution processing. We also report dλmax/dT, the temperature-sensitivity of lasing wavelength, of 0.03 nm/K, the lowest ever reported in a colloidal quantum dot system and 10 times lower than in traditional semiconductor quantum wells.

A solution-processed 1.53 μm quantum dot laser with temperature-invariant emission wavelength

Recently, a high efficiency, narrow-linewidth, chip-based stimulated Brillouin laser (SBL) was demonstrated using an ultra-high-Q, silica-on-silicon resonator. In this work, this novel laser is more fully characterized. The Schawlow Townes linewidth formula for Brillouin laser operation is derived and compared to linewidth data, and the fitting is used to measure the mechanical thermal quanta contribution to the Brillouin laser linewidth. A study of laser mode pulling by the Brillouin optical gain spectrum is also presented, and high-order, cascaded operation of the SBL is demonstrated. Potential application of these devices to microwave sources and phase-coherent communication is discussed.

Characterization of a high coherence, Brillouin microcavity laser on silicon

A compact 1.5 microm all-fiber pulsed coherent Doppler lidar system for wind sensing, which includes the functions of variable pulse width and automatic polarization control has been developed. The system configuration is introduced and key components used in the system are explained. Theoretical performances of the system in wind sensing are estimated and compared with experimental results. The measurable range corresponding to the detection probability of >80% is approximately 1 km or more in the case of 150 m range resolution under the normal atmospheric conditions.

Compact all-fiber pulsed coherent Doppler lidar system for wind sensing

The design and performance of a simple, multifunction 1.55-mum continuous-wave (cw) and frequency-modulated cw coherent laser radar system with an output power of 1 W is presented. The system is based on a semiconductor laser source plus an erbium-doped fiber amplifier, a polarization-independent fiber-optic circulator used as the transmit-receive switch, and digital signal processing. The system is shown to be able to perform wind-speed measurements even in clear atmospheric conditions when the visibility exceeds 40 km. The aerosol measurements indicate the potential to use single-particle detection for wind measurements with enhanced sensitivity. The system can perform range and line-of-sight velocity measurements of hard targets at ranges of the order of several kilometers with a range accuracy of a few meters and a velocity accuracy of 0.1 m/s by use of triangular-wave frequency modulation with compensation of the frequency-modulation response of the semiconductor laser. The system also demonstrates a capability for vibration sensing.
