Effect of high-pressure processing and thermal treatments on color and in vitro bioaccessibility of anthocyanin and antioxidants in cloudy pomegranate juice

Currently, many extracts from natural sources are added to cosmetic products for reducing facial aging and wrinkles. This study investigated the antiwrinkle activity of enriched extract of Isatidis Folium used for a novel antiwrinkle cream product. The result demonstrated that this enriched extract has excellent antiwrinkle activity by significantly inhibiting mRNA expression of matrix metalloproteinase-1, matrix metalloproteinase-3, and pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and upregulating the mRNA expression of IL-4 and procollagen. Additionally, to implement effective quality control of the entire manufacturing process of antiwrinkle cream products based on the enriched extract of Isatidis Folium, the main chemical constituents of the enriched extract of Isatidis Folium was evaluated by high–performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-PDA-ESI-MS/MS), five constituents were undisputedly confirmed. An HPLC-UV method in 15-min analysis time for quality assessment of the entire manufacturing process of antiwrinkle cream products was proposed and validated. The optimal conditions for extracting TMCA (3,4,5-trimethoxycinnamic acid) from the developed antiwrinkle cream products were determined using response surface methodology based on central composite design. The established HPLC method and optimal extract condition are suitable for routinely analyzing this novel antiwrinkle cream product.

Evaluation of the Antiwrinkle Activity of Enriched Isatidis Folium Extract and an HPLC-UV Method for the Quality Control of Its Cream Products.

Abstract In this study, we assessed 26 economic characteristics and yields of the mature fruit of 40 superior Camellia oleifera Abel plants grown at the C. oleifera germplasm resource nursery in the low-hot valley area of Southwest Zuizhou, China, using principal component analysis (PCA). Correlations among the characteristics and the variability of the plants in these characteristics were also analyzed. Out of the 26 characteristics, 16 primary economic characteristics were selected for comprehensive assessment, based on the results of which the plants were ordered to obtain excellent C. oleifera germplasms. The data were subjected to PCA, and the 16 characteristics were integrated into 6 independent comprehensive indices, which included PV1 (single-fruit weight), PV2 (pericarp thickness), PV3 (seed rate), PV4 (total unsaturated fatty acids), PV5 (iodine value) and PV6 (dry seed rate). Then, the sum of the products of the contribution rates of the components and components scores was taken as the comprehensive score of each superior plant. In C. oleifera grown in the low-hot valley area, the oil yield exhibited very significant positive correlations with the dry seed rate and kernel rate but a very significant negative correlation with the 100-seed weight. The dry seed rate exhibited very significant negative correlations with the fruit diameter and fresh seed rate. Among the 26 characteristics, the variations of the acid value, peroxide value, number of fertile seeds, 100-seed weight and single-fruit weight were great; those of the fruit diameter, fruit height, kernel yield, oleic acid and total unsaturated fatty acid were small, showing strong genetic stability. According to the obtained comprehensive scores, the top 10 plants were ordered as follows: CY-6 &gt; CY-13 &gt; CY-31 &gt; CY-11 &gt; CY-16 &gt; CY-22 &gt; CY-28 &gt; CY-23 &gt; CY-24 &gt; CY-29. This result was basically consistent with the ranking result according to the average yield per unit crown width within five years. In the low-hot valley area of Guizhou, C. oleifera exhibits excellent performance in single-fruit weight, total unsaturated fatty acids and kernel rate, 6 characteristics, i.e., acid value, peroxide value, single-fruit weight, the number of fertile seeds, 100-seed weight and α-linolenic acid possess high breeding potentials.

Fruit economic characteristics and yields of 40 superior Camellia oleifera Abel plants in the low-hot valley area of Guizhou Province, China

Genetic Diversity Analysis of the Phenotypic Traits of 215 Sugar Beet Germplasm Resources

Pomegranates (Punica granatum L.) are gaining popularity among consumers because of their high antioxidant activity and multiple medical benefits. China is rich in pomegranate genetic resources, but how to use them effectively is a problem worthy of deep consideration. In this article, thirty-seven pomegranate varieties from seven provinces in China were collected and analyzed for twelve phenotypic traits and twelve biochemical indicators (seeds and juices). The fruit and aril fresh weight ranged between 210.5 and 576.5 g and 121.0 to 327.5 g, respectively, and the edible rate (42.58–64.80%), seed weight (1.80–3.41 g), seed number (249.1–838.9), fruit height (10.51–15.48 mm), fruit diameter (11.46–17.50 mm), skin thickness (2.14–6.98 mm), and shape index (0.82–0.96) varied among the different genotypes. The pomegranate juice total phenolic content ranged from 40.91 to 132.47 µg/mL, and the total flavonoid content (14.08–137.72 µg/mL), vitamin C content (12.80–66.63 µg/mL), pH (3.10–4.34), total soluble solids (13.13–17.50°Brix), and titratable acidity (0.26–2.71%) also varied; the pomegranate seed total phenolic content ranged from 0.62 to 1.78 mg/g, and the total flavonoid content (0.39–0.99 mg/g), vitamin C content (7.55–13.90 mg/g), DPPH radical scavenging capacity (85.98–98.24%), and ABTS scavenging ability (28.72–51%) were also measured. The coefficients of variation of the studied traits ranged from 5.62 to 54.02%, and the phenotypic traits’ Shannon–Weaver diversity indexes ranged from 0.67 to 1.53. Cluster analysis divided the 37 varieties into three categories, providing a reference for improved variety breeding. In addition, genotypic and environmental effects mainly affected the pomegranate flavor and antioxidant activity, respectively.
