Preparing nurses and nursing students to care for older adults in lower and middle-income countries: A scoping review.

A current issue in workforce planning is ensuring healthcare professionals are both competent and willing to work with older adults with complex needs. This includes dementia care, which is widely recognised as a priority. Yet research suggests that working with older people is unattractive to undergraduate healthcare students. The aim of this systematic review and narrative synthesis is to explore the factors related to healthcare (medical and nursing) student preferences’ for working with older people and people with dementia. Searches were conducted in five databases: MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINHAL, BNI, ERIC. Screening, data extraction and quality appraisal were conducted by two independent reviewers. A narrative, data-based convergent synthesis was conducted. One thousand twenty-four papers were screened (139 full texts) and 62 papers were included for a narrative synthesis. Factors were grouped into seven categories; student characteristics, experiences of students, course characteristics, career characteristics, patient characteristics, work characteristics and the theory of planned behaviour. Health educators should review their role in cultivating student interest in working with older adults, with consideration of student preparation and the perceived value of this work. There is a lack of evidence about the career preferences of students in relation to dementia, and this warrants further research.

Preferences of nursing and medical students for working with older adults and people with dementia: a systematic review

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the attitudes of nursing and medical students toward older people in Turkey. Method: This was a cross-sectional and comparative descriptive study. The Turkish version of Kogan’s Old People Scale was used to evaluate attitudes toward older people among 618 students. Results: Medical students showed more positive attitudes toward older people than nursing students. Students who were females, whose economic income was less than expenditure, and who were not interested in working with older people after graduation showed less positive attitudes. Conclusion: The results suggested that positive attitudes toward older people exist; despite this, it is obvious that more efforts are required to enhance these attitudes. Implications for Practice: Revision and improvement in curricula are needed to enhance the attitudes of students toward older people, and lecturers in schools should further consider the need to prepare students for their roles as caregivers for thi...

Attitudes of Turkish Nursing and Medical Students Toward Elderly People

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of breast cancer fatalism and other factors on breast cancer awareness among Turkish women. This cross-sectional and comparative descriptive study was conducted with 894 women. Data were collected by Personal Information Form, Powe Fatalism Inventory and Champion’s Health Belief Model Scale. Seriousness, health motivation, BSE benefits and BSE self-efficacy perceptions of the women were moderate, and susceptibility and BSE barriers perceptions were low. It was determined that awareness of breast cancer of the women was affected by breast cancer fatalism, age, education level, employment status, marital status, family type, economic status, social assurance, menopause status, family history of cancer, family history of breast cancer, knowledge on BSE, source of information on BSE, performing of BSE, frequency of BSE performing, having a problem with breast, having a breast examination in hospital, feeling during breast examination by healthcare professional, sex of healthcare professional for breast examination and their health beliefs (p < .05). The results suggested that awareness of breast cancer of the women was affected by breast cancer fatalism. In providing breast cancer early diagnosis behaviors, it is recommended to evaluate fatalism perceptions and health beliefs of the women and to arrange educational programs for this purpose.

The Effect of Breast Cancer Fatalism on Breast Cancer Awareness Among Turkish Women

Background: Umbilical cord infection developing subsequent to bacterial colonization is one of the outstanding reasons of newborn mortality and morbidity in underdeveloped and developing countries Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of sponge and tub bathing methods on umbilical cord separation time in full term babies in Turkey. Patients and Methods: This quasi-experimental and randomized controlled study was performed on 100 healthy term newborn babies and their mothers. One-hundred full-term babies (51 sponge bathing, 49 tub bathing) born at a state hospital between 14.03.2013 and 18.05.2013 with gestational age of 38-42 weeks, weighing 2500 grams and above and met the selection criteria were included as the study sample. Two booklets were prepared about sponge bathing and tub bathing. Mothers were instructed about sponge bathing and tub bathing, umbilical cord care in prenatal and postnatal periods. The first postnatal visit was performed at the hospital. Home visits and telephone calls were continued until the day of cord separation. Number, percent, mean and standard deviation values, qui-square and Mann-Whitney U tests were used for data assessment. Results: The time of separation of umbilical cord in babies who were given sponge bathing (6.1 ± 1.4) was shorter compared to those given tub bathing (8.3 ± 2.5) (P < 0.005). Conclusions: Since wetting of umbilical cord during tub bathing delays the separation of umbilical cord, sponge bathing is recommended for newborns until the umbilical cord falls off.

Ozet A rastirma, Zonguldak il merkezinde yasayan engelli cocuga sahip annelerin stresle basa cikma yontemlerinin degerlendirilmesi amaciyla tanimlayici olarak yapilmistir. Zonguldak il merkezinde bulunan uc rehabilitasyon merkezine devam etmekte olan 210 engelli cocugun annesi arastirmanin evrenini olusturmustur. Arastirma suresince 178 anneye ulasilmistir (%84.8). Veri toplama araci olarak arastirmacilar tarafindan hazirlanan sosyodemografik degiskenleri, engelli cocuga sahip olmak ile ilgili dusunceleri iceren Tanimlayici Bilgi Formu ve Stresle Basa Cikma Tarzlari Olcegi kullanilmistir. Verilerin degerlendirilmesinde sayi, yuzde dagilimlari, Kruskall-Wallis varyans analizi, Student t testi, Mann-Whitney U testi kullanilmistir. The mothers of each 210 disabled children attending 3 rehabilitation centers in Zonguldak city center form the content of that research. During the research 178 mothers were consulted with (% 84.8). As data collection tools, sociodemographic variables prepared by researchers, Descriptive Information Form containing thoughts about having disabled chlid and Scale of the Ways to Cope with Stress were used. For the evaluation of datas, counting and proportion distribution, Kruskall-Wallis variance analysis, Student t test, Mann-Whitney U test were used. About her disabled child, %62,4 percent of mothers (n=111) stated that they were troubled with point of view of the society, %52,8 (n=94) percent of them stated that they had difficulty in communiceting with their social surroundings, % 40,4 percent of them (n=72) stated that they felt guilty for her child’s disability, %83,1 percent of them (n=148) stated that they had difficulties in the child’s treatment and %43,8 percent of them (n=78) stated that they weren’t supported by their social surroundings. A meaningful diffrerence has been found between mother’s education background and helpless, resigned approach of coping with stress methods scales and seeking social support, the point of having enough knowledge about the child’s disability and seeking social support, the state of feeling discomfort about point of view of the society and helpless, resigned approach and seeking social support, the point of having difficulty in communicating with their social surroundings and sub-dimensions of helpless, resigned approach (p<0.05). The families with disabled children need to be examined closely psychologically and privided psychosocial support when it is needed. Zihinsel Engelli Çocuğa Sahip Annelerin Stresle Baş Etme Yöntemlerinin Değerlendirilmesi

Aim With the increase in life expectancy, it has become necessary to expand our knowledge of how older individuals perceive their own ageing and how ageing affects their quality of life. The aim of the study was to determine older adults' attitudes towards ageing and the relationship between attitudes and quality of life among community-dwelling older adults in Turkey. Methods This cross-sectional and correlational study was conducted in Zonguldak, Turkey. The sample included 999 community-dwelling older adults, who were selected from five family health centres. The data were collected between April and June 2015 by using the Attitudes to Aging Questionnaire and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument-Older Adults Module. A hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted to test the predictive value of attitude to ageing on quality of life. Results Multiple regression analysis revealed that the subscales of Attitudes to Ageing Questionnaire (psychosocial loss (β = -0.289), physical change (β = 0.296), and psychological growth (β = 0.279)) were statistically significant predictors of quality of life. Attitudes to ageing explained 46.6% of the quality of life among community-dwelling older adults in Turkey (R2 = 0.466). Conclusion The significant impact of attitudes to ageing on quality of life suggests the need for better recognition of attitudes to ageing in older adults.
