Single phase La-doped BaTiO3 with the formula Ba1−xLaxTi1−x/4O3: 0⩽x⩽0.20 was prepared by solid state reaction of oxide mixtures at 1350 °C, 3 days, in O2. The tetragonal distortion in undoped BaTiO3 decreased with x and samples were cubic for x⩾0.05. Both the tetragonal/cubic and orthorhombic/tetragonal transition temperatures decreased with x, but at different rates, and appeared to coalesce at x∼0.08. The value of the permittivity maximum at the tetragonal/cubic phase transition in ceramic samples increased from ∼10 000 for x=0 at 130 °C to ∼25 000 for x=0.06 at ∼−9 °C. At larger x, the permittivity maximum broadened, showed “relaxor”-type frequency dependent permittivity characteristics and continued to move to lower temperatures. Samples fired in O2 were insulating and showed no signs of donor doping whereas air-fired samples were semiconducting, attributable to oxygen loss.

Electrical and structural characteristics of lanthanum-doped barium titanate ceramics

Direct observations using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) of the grain-boundary chemistry of selectively doped SrTiO3 and BaTiO3 show the predominant solute segregation in both systems to be that of acceptors (negative effective charge). Appreciable donor segregation is not observed even at lattice concentrations as high as 10 mol%. Donor and acceptor codoped materials show segregation of the acceptor only. The results are consistent with a grain-boundary space-charge distribution consisting of a positive boundary and negative space charge. All grain boundaries examined also show an excess of Ti relative to the A-site cations, suggesting that the positive boundary charge is at least partially accommodated by an excess of Ti ions. The sign and magnitude of the electrostatic potential appear to be remarkably insensitive to changes in lattice defect structure with solute doping. Grain-boundary chemistry appears dominated by space-charge segregation, in contrast with the predictions of recent atomistic simulations which neglect the space-charge potential.

Grain‐Boundary Chemistry of Barium Titanate and Strontium Titanate: I, High‐Temperature Equilibrium Space Charge

Defect studies of doped and undoped barium titanate using computer simulation techniques

The influence of dopants (Cr, Co, Fe, Ni, Y, Er, Tb, Gd, Pr and La) on the crystal structure of barium titanate was studied at room temperature and at 250°C using X-ray diffraction. Fine BaTiO3 powders (Ba/Ti=1.02, size ≈30 nm) have been doped with 1 at% of the foreign element and annealed for 14 and 62 h at two different temperatures: 950 and 1350°C. The room temperature structure of doped BaTiO3 was in any case tetragonal with c/a ratio lower than in the undoped perovskite, but dependent on dopant nature and particle size. For powders calcined at 1350°C, the particle size was in the range 1–5 μm and the decrease in tetragonality was mainly determined by dopant incorporation. Powders treated at 950°C had particles more than one order of magnitude finer (0.1–0.2 μm) and a systematic lowering of the c/a ratio in comparison to the samples annealed at higher temperature was observed. Comparison of the experimental variations of the unit cell edge of cubic BaTiO3 (250°C) with the results of atomistic computer simulations gives indication on the preferential incorporation site of the dopant. In particular, La3+ and Pr3+ prefer to substitute at the Ba site, whereas Tb3+ and Gd3+ give partial substitution at the Ti site. For Er3+ and Y3+ preferential substitution at the Ti site is predicted. For transition metal ions, substitution at the Ti site with oxygen vacancy compensation is confirmed, although their behaviour is less accurately reproduced.

Influence of foreign ions on the crystal structure of BaTiO3

The electrical properties of two single-phase, lanthanum-doped BaTiO3 compositions, x= 0.03 and x= 0.20, in Ba1–xLaxTi1–x/4O3 were investigated by impedance spectroscopy after heat treatment in oxygen, argon, and air at 1350°C. Samples heated in oxygen were electrically insulating, whereas those heated in argon lost oxygen and were semiconducting at room temperature, irrespective of x. Samples heated in air showed intermediate electrical properties and also were electrically inhomogeneous; the two compositions showed different electrical behaviors, and a model for each, based on oxygen nonstoichiometry within the ceramics, is proposed. Oxygen deficiency in samples sintered in air was avoided by heating at 1200°C, instead of 1350°C. Alternatively, oxygen lost from ceramics heated in air at 1350°C was regained by postannealing in oxygen at 1350°C.
