Multi-objective optimization and design of farming systems
TL;DR: The FarmDESIGN model is presented, which has been developed to overcome limitations by coupling a bio-economical farm model that evaluates the productive, economic and environmental farm performance, to a multi-objective optimization algorithm that generates a large set of Pareto-optimal alternative farm configurations.
Journal ArticleDOI
The NDICEA model, a tool to improve nitrogen use efficiency in cropping systems
TL;DR: In this paper, the NDICEA model describes soil water dynamics, nitrogen mineralization and inorganic nitrogen dynamics in relation to weather and crop demand, resulting in a target-oriented modelling approach.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mixed farming systems as a way towards a more efficient use of nitrogen in European Union agriculture
TL;DR: In this article, the development of the environmental nitrogen problem connected with agriculture in the European Union (EU) is described briefly, and it is shown that the problem is related to recent segregation of animal and crop production, and specialisation and intensification on farms and in regions.

Nitrogen Efficiency in Mixed Farming Systems
TL;DR: The problem of nitrogen surpluses in Northwestern Europe is related in part to recent segregation of animal and crop production and a long-term solution can be found by re-integration of the main agricultural production components into mixed farming systems.
