During the last five years a peak of interest has been observed in the problems related to computer-aided timetabling. The most recent works in this area are based on the application of modern information technologies. Here the main directions of modern research and design are reviewed. A classification is proposed for academic timetabling problems, requirements for the timetables, mathematical models, solution methods, data representation, and interface design. Modern problem solution and software design approaches are represented in connection with the theoretical background and world experience of 35 years. The integration of several algorithmic and interactive tools is discussed. Criticisms of timetabling computer support practicability and related myths are also reviewed. Related topics, like sport scheduling and scheduling sport, are represented. Some unsolved matters are outlined.

This paper discusses a methodology for representing the subject matter for CAL dialogue. The methodology is based upon Petri Nets and is oriented to maximize the possibilities of control and individualization provided by CAL. Simple examples show how to build a content representation and how the same structure may be used as a common basis for different learning strategies. “The language of computation has become the proper dialect for discussing the basic issues of both psychology and education” (Goldstein and Papert).

A methodology for designing and implementing automatized diagnostic testing associated with remedial CAL sequences has been presented. This methodology is based on a hierarchical model of subject matter which provides ordered relationships among the various levels of student knowledge. The test handling strategy is designed to supply detailed information about student achievements minimizing the student workload imposed by the test. The central idea is that, in a hierarchically organized subject matter, the evaluation of the achievement of a topic gives information about the achievement of subordinate topics. So the test administration is not strictly predetermined but depends on the actual student knowledge. After the test a CAL remedial environment can be provided: different entry points and different paths may be automatically chosen by the system on the basis of the test results.

COMES, a system for computer aided instruction oriented to programming languages, is described here. The system allows a full integration of theory learning and practical applications since it offers two different teaching strategies, one corresponding to a purely tutorial environment and one to a programming and problem-solving environment that has to be specialized for a given programming language. Thus, the learning process can be based on a tight alternation of theory and practice and relies more on personal experience than on memorization of abstract information. The main design choices are discussed in the paper and two examples of dialogues are supplied.
