A spectral beam-splitting architecture is shown to provide an excellent basis for a four junction photovoltaic receiver with a virtually ideal band gap combination. Spectrally selective beam-splitters are used to create a very efficient light trap in form of a 45° parallelepiped. The light trap distributes incident radiation onto the different solar cells with an optical efficiency of more then 90%. Highly efficient solar cells including III–V semiconductors and silicon were fabricated and mounted into the light trapping assembly. An integrated characterization of such a receiver including the measurement of quantum efficiency as well as indoor and outdoor I–V measurements is shown. Moreover, the optical loss mechanisms and the optical efficiency of the spectral beam-splitting approach are discussed. Four-junction spectral beam-splitting photovoltaic receiver with high optical efficiency

We have designed, fabricated, and tested a small, integrated photovoltaic module comprised of two separately-contacted, high efficiency, multijunction solar cells and non-imaging optics that both concentrate and spectrally split the incoming light. This hybrid design allows us to individually optimize the tandem cells and optical elements. The system has a measured module efficiency, including optical and packaging losses but not power combination losses, of 38.5 ± 1.9% under the AM1.5 direct terrestrial spectrum. The internal optics concentrate the light by a factor of approximately 20. We find excellent agreement between the modeled and measured performance. Compact spectrum splitting photovoltaic module with high efficiency

Shockley Read Hall equation poses a limit to the maximum conversion efficiency of broadband solar radiation attainable by means of a single bandgap converter. A possible approach to overcome such a limit is to convert different parts of the broadband spectrum using different single junction converters. We consider here a different modus operandi where a single low-cost optimized plastic prismatic structure performs simultaneously the tasks of concentrating the solar light and, based on the dispersive behavior of the employed material, spatially splitting it into its spectral component. We discuss its approach, optical simulations, fabrication issues and preliminary experimental results demonstrating its feasibility for cost effective high efficiency Concentrated Photovoltaic Systems (CPV) systems.

Single element spectral splitting solar concentrator for multiple cells CPV system.

To achieve high energy conversion efficiency, a solar module architecture called lateral spectrum splitting concentrator photovoltaics (LSSCPV) is being developed. LSSCPV can concentrate available sunlight and laterally split a single beam into bands with different spectra for absorption by different solar cells with band gaps matched to the split spectrum. Test assemblies of a sample LSSCPV architecture were constructed, each of which contains four p-n junctions and two optical pieces. Independent experiments or simulations had been implemented on the components but by using optimal assumptions. In order to examine the actual performances of all the components, which are dependent on each other and the light source, direct outdoor measurements were made. A set of self-consistent efficiency definitions was articulated and a test bed was developed to measure the parameters required by the efficiency calculation. By comparing the component efficiency items derived from the outdoor measurement and the expected values based on independent simulations, the potential opportunities for efficiency improvement are determined. In the outdoor measurement at the University of Delaware, the optical component demonstrated 89.1% efficiency. Additional assemblies were tested at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Lateral Spectrum Splitting Concentrator Photovoltaics: Direct Measurement of Component and Submodule Efficiency

We have designed a single thin planar diffractive optical element ( DOE) based on the principle of diffractive optics to simultaneously split and concentrate the incident light into several energy ranges for lateral multijunction solar cells. A prototype with the maximum thickness of 6.95 mu m and 32 quantized levels in depth was fabricated by photolithographic technology. The spectrum-splitting and concentrating performance of the prototype, which were measured quantitatively, show good agreement with the simulation results. As mass production of a DOE can be produced by imprint technology, our design provides a feasible means for low-cost, large-scale, and high-efficiency photovoltaic applications.
