We present results from the JINA REACLIB project, an ongoing effort to maintain a current and accurate library of thermonuclear reaction rates for astrophysical applications. Ongoing updates are transparently documented and version tracked, and any set of rates is publicly available and can be downloaded via a Web interface at http://groups.nscl.msu.edu/jina/reaclib/db/. We discuss here our library V1.0, a snapshot of recommended rates for stable and explosive hydrogen and helium burning. We show that the updated reaction rates lead to modest but significant changes in full network, one-dimensional X-ray burst model calculations, compared with calculations with previously used reaction rate sets. The late time behavior of X-ray burst light curves shows significant changes, suggesting that the previously found small discrepancies between model calculations and observations may be solved with a better understanding of the nuclear input. Our X-ray burst model calculations are intended to serve as a benchmark for future model comparisons and sensitivity studies, as the complete underlying nuclear physics is fully documented and publicly available.

The last decades brought impressive progress in synthesizing and studying properties of nuclides located very far from the beta stability line. Among the most fundamental properties of such exotic nuclides, the ones usually established first are the half-life, possible radioactive decay modes, and their relative probabilities. When approaching limits of nuclear stability, new decay modes set in. First, beta decays are accompanied by emission of nucleons from highly excited states of daughter nuclei. Second, when the nucleon separation energy becomes negative, nucleons start being emitted from the ground state. A review of the decay modes occurring close to the limits of stability is presented. The experimental methods used to produce, identify, and detect new species and their radiation are discussed. The current theoretical understanding of these decay processes is reviewed. The theoretical description of the most recently discovered and most complex radioactive process---the two-proton radioactivity---is discussed in more detail.

Radioactive decays at limits of nuclear stability

Nine new very neutron-deficient isotopes of Ag, Pd, Rh, and Ru have been identified among the reaction products of an [ital E]/[ital A]=60 MeV [sup 106]Cd beam using the A1200 projectile fragment separator at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. One of these isotopes, [sup 94]Ag, is among the heaviest [ital N]=[ital Z] nuclei observed so far. The resulting mass spectra are presented and the astrophysical implications of the stability towards proton emission of one of the new isotopes, [sup 95]Ag, are discussed.

Identification of new nuclei near the proton drip line.

The reactions $^{10}\mathrm{B}$(p,\ensuremath{\alpha}${)}^{7}$Be and $^{11}\mathrm{B}$(p,\ensuremath{\alpha}${)}^{8}$Be are studied at thermonuclear energies using DWBA calculations. For both reactions, transitions to the ground states and first excited states are investigated. In the case of $^{10}\mathrm{B}$(p,\ensuremath{\alpha}${)}^{7}$Be, a resonance at ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathrm{res}}$=10 keV can be consistently described in the potential model, thereby allowing the extension of the astrophysical S-factor data to very low energies. Strong interference with a resonance at about ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathrm{res}}$=550 keV require a Breit-Wigner description of that resonance and the introduction of an interference term for the reaction $^{10}\mathrm{B}$(p,${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}_{1}$${)}^{7}$${\mathrm{Be}}^{\mathrm{*}}$. Two isospin T=1 resonances (at ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathrm{res}\mathrm{}1}$=149 keV and ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathrm{res}\mathrm{}2}$=619 keV) observed in the $^{11}\mathrm{B}$+p reactions necessitate Breit-Wigner resonance and interference terms to fit the data of the $^{11}\mathrm{B}$(p,\ensuremath{\alpha}${)}^{8}$Be reaction. S-factors and thermonuclear reaction rates are given for each reaction. The present calculation is the first consistent parametrization for the transition to the ground states and first excited states at low energies. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Study of the β-delayed neutron emission of 19C

The {beta}-delayed neutron decay of {sup 17}B was studied using a radioactive ion beam. The neutron energies, measured via time of flight, give information on states in {sup 17}C above the {sup 16}C+neutron threshold. States in {sup 17}C were found at excitation energies of 2.25(2), 2.64(2), and 3.82(5) MeV, and possibly at 1.18(1) MeV. These low-lying states are of possible interest for nuclear physics as well as for astrophysics. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
