One of the most interesting properties of an impacting system is the possibility of an infinite number of impacts occurring in a finite time (such as a ball bouncing to rest on a table). Such behaviour is usually called chatter. In this paper we make a systematic study of chattering behaviour for a periodically forced, single-degree-of-freedom impact oscillator with a restitution law for each impact. We show that chatter can occur for such systems and we compute the sets of initial data which always lead to chatter. We then show how these sets determine the intricate form of the domains of attraction for various types of asymptotic periodic motion. Finally, we deduce the existence of periodic motion which includes repeated chattering behaviour and show how this motion is related to certain types of chaotic behaviour.

Chattering and Related Behaviour in Impact Oscillators

Models of impact oscillators using an instantaneous impact law are by their very nature discontinuous. These discontinuities geve rise to bifurcations which cannot be classified using the usual tools of bifurcation analysis. However, we present numerical evidence which suggests that these discontinuous bifurcations are just the limits (in some sense) of standard bifurcations of smooth dynamical systems as the impact is hardened. Finally we show how one dimensional maps of the interval with essentially similar characteristics can exhibit the same kinds of bifurcational behaviour, and how these bifurcations are related to standard bifurcations.

Bifurcations in impact oscillations

In this paper, extensive experimental investigations of an impact oscillator with a one-sided elastic constraint are presented. Different bifurcation scenarios under varying the excitation frequency near grazing are shown for a number of values of the excitation amplitude. The mass acceleration signal is used to effectively detect contacts with the secondary spring. The most typical recorded scenario is when a non-impacting periodic orbit bifurcates into an impacting one via grazing mechanism. The resulting orbit can be stable, but in many cases it loses stability through grazing. Following such an event, the evolution of the attractor is governed by a complex interplay between smooth and non-smooth bifurcations. In some cases, the occurrence of coexisting attractors is manifested through discontinuous transition from one orbit to another through boundary crisis. The stability of non-impacting and impacting period-1 orbits is then studied using a newly proposed experimental procedure. The results are compared with the predictions obtained from standard theoretical stability analysis and a good correspondence between them is shown for different stiffness ratios. A mathematical model of a damped impact oscillator with one-sided elastic constraint is used in the theoretical studies.

The transition from stable periodic non-impacting motion to impacting motion is analysed for a mechanical oscillator. By using local methods, it is shown that a grazing impact leads to an almost one-dimensional stretching in state space. A condition can then be formulated, such that a grazing trajectory will be stable if the condition is fulfilled. If this is the case, the bifurcation will be continuous and the motion after the bifurcation can be understood by a one-dimensional mapping. This mapping is known to exhibit chaotic solutions as well as arbitrary long stable cycles, depending on parameters.
