Abstract: In the mid-1990s, the World Health Organization (WHO) introduced an algorithm to assist health professionals with limited training in the prevention and management of common childhood illnesses. The Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) algorithm has subsequently been evaluated in a range of countries and reports have been published from Uganda1,2, Bangladeshi, Kenya ', The Gambia\", Ethiopiaand India\", Early evaluation helped shape adaptations of the original algorithm to specific country circumstances, in particular, resource limitations and malaria endemicity.
