A hybrid propulsion and energy management system for use in marine vessels and other variable demand propulsion applications monitors and draws energy from various energy sources dynamically to implement multiple operating modes and provide efficient system operation across a range of propulsive demands, altering the operation and output of various energy sources in response to propulsive load demands, hotel loads and auxiliary energy demands. The propulsion system incorporates at least two propulsive sources, including at least one main propulsive engine and at least one motor-generator unit arranged to drive a common output shaft, and the energy management system dynamically shifts operation of each of the two sources to satisfy propulsive demands. The main propulsive engine and the motor-generator unit are capable of driving the common output shaft both independently and simultaneously. The motor-generator unit(s) are available to operate either as a motor driving the output shaft or as a generator supplying energy to the energy distribution system.

An induction motor controller is provided. The induction motor controller includes a first module that derives a commanded stator voltage vector, in a stator flux reference frame, via a rotor flux regulator loop and a torque regulator loop, which process at least partially in the stator flux reference frame. The induction motor controller includes a second module that processes the commanded stator voltage vector to produce AC (alternating current) power for an induction motor.

Method for synchronizing inverter units (INU11, INU12) that are connected in parallel and supply a motor, and a parallel connection arrangement, in which motor is either one winding, which is supplied by inverter units connected in parallel, or a plurality of parallel windings, in which each winding is supplied by its own inverter unit, in which parallel connection one inverter unit functions as a master and the others as slaves, in which method a telecommunications bus is arranged- between the units, and in which each inverter unit has its own modulation cycle counter, which are synchronized with each other on the basis of telecommunications messages, preferably serial telecommunications messages. In the invention all the inverter units take into memory the value of their own modulation counter at the termination time of a telecommunications message (Mes2), the master inverter unit sends the reading of its own counter in the following message to the other inverter units, and the other inverter units correct the reading notified by the master on the basis of the readings of their own modulation counters in the direction that makes the counters operate as simultaneously as possible.

Parallel connection of inverters

A method for controlling at least two variable frequency drives connected in parallel. The method comprises, for each variable frequency drive, communicating a magnetizing current component value to a master controller, and receiving a speed demand, a flux demand, and an average magnetizing current component value from the master controller. The method also comprises determining a motor speed and a motor flux based on measurements of a stator voltage and current of a motor coupled to the variable frequency drive, determining a speed reference based on a torque current component value, and determining a flux reference based on the magnetizing current component value and the average magnetizing current component value. The method further comprises adjusting a torque current component based on the speed reference and/or adjusting a magnetizing current component based on the flux reference.
