An apparatus and a method for raising an output efficiency in a mobile communication terminal are provided. The apparatus includes a supply modulator and a power amplifier. The supply modulator includes a DC-DC converter, a voltage regulator, and a switching regulator. The supply modulator modulates an envelope component of an input signal to generate power. The power amplifier amplifies a phase component of the input signal using the power generated by the supply modulator as a power source of a collector/drain. The DC-DC converter raises battery power of the mobile communication terminal. The voltage regulator determines an output voltage of the supply modulator using the power raised by the DC-DC converter. The switching regulator determines an output current of the supply regulator using the battery power of the mobile communication terminal.

A multi-mode communications transmitter includes a signal decomposer that converts rectangular-coordinate in-channel and quadrature channel signals into polar-coordinate amplitude and angle component signals and form therefrom first and second modulation signals. The signal decomposition process performed by the signal decomposer combines envelope-reduction and restoration (ERR) with filtering to reduce the bandwidths of the first and second modulation signals compared to the bandwidths of the unmodified amplitude and angle component signals. The reduction in signal bandwidths eases the design requirements of the electrical components needed to process and generate the signals applied to the power supply and radio frequency (RF) input ports of the multi-mode communications transmitter's power amplifier (PA). It also makes the multi-mode communications transmitter more forgiving to gain and delay mismatches between the signals applied to the power supply and RF input ports of the PA, compared to conventional polar modulation transmitters.

A power amplifier, a radio remote unit (RRU), and a base station, where the power amplifier includes an envelope controller, a main power amplifier, and an auxiliary power amplifier. The main power amplifier and the auxiliary power amplifier both set an envelope voltage output by the envelope modulator as operating voltages, and because the operating voltages of the main power amplifier and the auxiliary power amplifier may be adjusted simultaneously, symmetry of the power amplifier is improved, and an efficiency loss occurring probability is low, thereby enhancing efficiency of the power amplifier.

An RF transmitter system operating on a broader frequency range and providing a higher output power dynamic range is described. Low power RF signal is produced from a baseband signal using a quadrature modulator and using a broadband local oscillator signal. A microcontroller system controls the RF transmitter by selecting frequency range to be produced by the frequency synthesizer, selecting appropriate amplification path for producing the required output power, controlling the power detection sections for providing precise automatic power and automatic gain control.

Methods and apparatus for controlling power in a polar modulation transmitter. An exemplary polar modulation transmitter includes a radio frequency power amplifier (RF PA), a phase path having circuitry operable to generate a constant amplitude phase modulated signal, and an amplitude path including an envelope modulator circuit having first and second envelope modulation paths. The RF phase modulated signal is applied to an RF input of the RF PA, while an envelope modulated power supply signal generated by a selected one of the first and second envelope modulation paths is coupled to a power supply input of the RF PA. The second envelope modulation path is selected during times when the power required by the RF PA is below some predetermined power level. During times when the RF PA requires power above the predetermined power level, the first envelope modulation path is selected.

According to a transmission power control signal including information on a transmission power change amount ΔP, it is possible to decide whether to perform mode switching between a compressed mode and a non-compressed mode by referencing an output power level of a power amplifier (103) or to perform mode switching between the compressed mode and the non-compressed mode without referencing the output power level of the power amplifier (103). Thus, it is possible to operate a measurement unit such as a detection circuit (106), an LPF (108), and an ADC (109) only when substantially required. Accordingly, it is possible to suppress thefluctuation (output power discontinuity) of the transmission power attributed to mode switching with a low power consumption.

A transmission apparatus has two modes of power amplifier operation, in which mode 1 is inherently accurate, mode 2 is inherently less accurate, and measurement of a power amplifier output from mode 1 is used to correct a power amplifier output in mode 2 . Mode 1 may be a compressed mode and mode 2 may be a non-compressed mode. The apparatus may include a power controller that provides overlapping scaling factor sets for modes 1 and 2 and controls transmission power using the scaling factor sets. Upon a mode transition, the controller uses the overlapping scaling factors and changes the scaling factor set for the mode of a destination of the transition based on actual measurement representative of transmission power, for example, by carrying out power alignment loop operations. A cellular mobile device may include such transmission apparatus. A polar modulation transmitter is also disclosed.
